TEMPEST sounds great!

I am not the biggest fan of Dylan's recent albums, so for me this may well be his best since UNDER THE RED SKY (1990), which I consider to be tremendously under-rated.

Others may think it's his best since LOVE & THEFT (2001). But to find out, check out the free stream on I-Tunes!

It shows the tracks for Tempest on i-tunes(store), but.... they won't play, still blacked out. Says I can pre-order, expected release 9/11.

Thanks for the link! I've listened to "Tempest" a couple of times through now and it is plenty good, although to me it sounds a lot like "Modern Times". Which is not a BAD thing as I love that album, but it's hardly a departure, and I don't see this one topping "Love and Theft" in my book.

Here's how I'd rate his more recent studio albums:

Love And Theft (9/10; ALMOST flawless)
Modern Times (8/10; ahead of "Time Out Of Mind" just because it sounds warmer and is more consistent)
Time Out Of Mind (7/10; some of his very best stuff, but a bit uneven in places too; production is a bit "cold" to me too)
Together Through Life (5/10; this one just never grew on me much...)

"Tempest" is still too new to me to rate, but I see it as a 7 or 8 album so far. It could improve though (Love and Theft didn't initially blow me away either, but now I love every track). Even if it doesn't, it sounds like another solid 21st century Dylan release. Amazing.

I am not to receive my vinyl edition until next week and I am anxious to hear the new lp after the disappointing last album (Together Through Life). I love Modern Times and think it is as strong as Love and Theft

100% agreed -- I listened to the iTunes stream this afternoon, and I hope to pick up the CD next week. :)

I too was disappointed in his last couple albums. I'll be sure to check this one out. Actually I like GOOD AS I BEEN TO YOU better than any since.

Haven't heard TEMPEST yet, but unlike some others on here, I really liked TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE.

Viva --

I assume your #2 album is 1997's "Time Out Of Mind" (which contains the song "Not Dark Yet"). "Dark" is just a great, great song and the high point of that album for me too. One of the best songs he's done over the last coupla decades. And there are other gems as well, but I didn't find it quite as consistent as "Modern Times". So I have your 2 and 3 spots reversed, but not by much (they're both solid albums imo).

Agree on both being solid...and I saw him do "Not Dark Yet" once live...awesome!
I'm getting Dylan/Knopfler tickets next week!!!

You know what one of my all time favote disc of Bob's is...Tell Tale Signs: Bootleg Series 8...get it.
I paid an s-load and got the extra disc just to have all three Mississipi outtakes...

Dylan is only doing 1 TX show and of the big cities bands tend to hit (SA, Hou, Dall), it's the one furthest from me and that I like least (Dallas), so I'm probably going to have to miss this one since I just laid down a ton for ACL Fest tix in Austin.

I too have Tell Tale Signs and also laid out for the 3 disc version. My fave track is the live "Things Have Changed". Musically, totally different than the studio version and yet it's every bit as good. Not many can take an already great song, totally rework it and have it come out still fantastic!

Bob Bykowski says:
'Tempest' has excellent songs, but IMO, the vocals have reached a level of gravel where it has become almost unlistenable. Dylan is one of my five all-time favorite artists, and his songwriting prowess has never waivered. But the constant touring and years of smoking have made his singing sound like modern-day Clint Eastwood talking mixed with Tom Waits crooning after an all-nighter. It doesn't make for pleasurable listening. Yet, the songs in and of themselves are great.

Tempest is one of his best songs in a longggg time.
Forty some verses, no chorus and a wonderful Bob styled story.
To me it was just Bob telling everyone else "I've still got it and it's better than the rest of you!"

I have to agree with Robert Bykowski - I just can't get past the weak vocals.

I must be in the minority here, but I love Together Through Life. He got on a roll with Time Out Of Mind, and hasn't slowed down yet! Tempest, Love And Theft, Modern Times....all terrific to my ears!

Mike B. says:
Dylan can still pull the rabbit out of the hat when he wants to, and it's great to see he's still "got it" after all these years. "Tempest" is a strong set of songs worthy of all the praise it's received, and is a fine addition to his recorded legacy.
