Gaia says:
Does anyone know any good romance novels where the woman is raped or almosted raped by "hero". One where the girl fights back and doesn't just lie there like a weak idiot?

W. Laine says:
Do you mean "Bodice Rippers"? Their number is legion.

You might have better luck in the Historical Romance forum. In fact, I remember there being a thread there specifically for bodice rippers like you describe.

I'm reading The Iron Duke right now (by Meljean Brook) It's steampunk, in a fictional victorian-like society.
I've just finished a scene which a few reviewers considered rape, but I am on the fence about it.
The h does say no, and she means it, but the H does not go all the way, and they are both drunk.
It's a sort of grey area I suppose. Has anyone else read it?

ETA she does fight him, but she's too drunk to be effective.

Maggie says:
I was also on the fence after reading it. This was a wonderful book, but that particular scene kind of spoiled it for me. I am not a fan of rape-by-hero. Whether it was actual rape, I still don't know after re-reading. But it was just too close for my liking. I will read the next one as the world concept is truly unique.

Dr. Amour says:
Sure. Because nothing says "romance" like rape... :\

Windflower by Laura London has almost rape. It's also really really good. There were a couple times I got all choked up. (rare for me)

Also, The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, another really good book, it does have rape.

The Iron Duke is also very good, but I didn't see that scene as rape.

Bodice Rippers are what you're looking for! :)

CLB77 says:
It means there are tons of them. It's a very well-used trope, found most often in the historical genre. Forced seduction doesn't play so well in contemporary stories. What's the one everyone talks about? Stormfire? Search for threads on that and I'm willing to bet you'll get similar recommendations.

Is there actually a sub genre of romance called rape romance? That's an oxymoron. Rape? Romance? I'm serious in asking this question.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 28, 2010 10:01:20 AM PST
yes Stormfire - it doesn't start out as a romance, but rather as revenge...but develops into more...IMHO (and I already know i'll get voted down) - it takes a skilled writer to be able to take an event such as that and turn the relationship into something else...but Stormfire isn't a happy ended, and it is a huge read

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 28, 2010 10:27:11 AM PST
Thanks for your reply, Deanna. I agree with you that it would take an extremely skilled author to pull this off. I'm going to check out Stormfire. I've not heard of this title before.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 28, 2010 10:29:22 AM PST
its really hard to find and expensive to buy...I think I saw a copy going on ebay for about $60 at one stage...its one of other 3 written by the author; out of print and her estate is not allowing any re-prints...

someone has a copy of it that they were sending around at one stage - maybe check on the coffee-shop thread and ask there.

J. Holt says:
Virginia Henley's The Hawk and the Dove. Hero thinks heroine has been playing him for a fool and has shagged another guy. Finds out she's still a virgin the hard way. Still in print. Read it 20 years ago - still a secret favorite of mine (sorry M. Clayton). And yes, the heroine fights back, not at all a dish rag or "dove" as the title reads. I'd say she's the hawk. ;)The Hawk and the Dove

Thanks, Deanna. I will do that.

Edited to add: What is the author's name?

I found Stormfire on Amazon. Out of print but the reviews are still up. After reading some of the reviews, I'm glad I've never read this book. Not my taste. I like my romance books to be loving.

One of my faves with this theme is Deceive Not My Heart, an old historical by Shirlee Busbee. I'm not generally a fan of rapist heroes, but in this case the hero believes the heroine to be a prostitute sent by his host for his enjoyment, so it's slightly more palatable (IMHO at least).

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 28, 2010 1:15:07 PM PST
Dr. Amour says:
EXACTLY!!! There is NOTHING "loving" about rape.

Oh! So let me see....... 0 out of 4 people DISAGREE with my statement that there is nothing loving about rape.

Let me ask you ladies, have any of you been raped? Huh?

Until you have BEEN THERE, keep your no-click fingers to YOURSELVES!!!!!!

Anne-Marie, nobody is asking you to approve of these suggestions. You're as bad as those trolls you profess to hate in your other topic. No one is making you read this topic.

Shani, Definitely check out the historical romance forum, or just search for Bodice Rippers. They were a big thing back in the '80s and there are tons and tons of them, in all varying degrees.

Posted on Nov 28, 2010 1:33:21 PM PST
Anne-Marie - you will quickly learn that people just vote on people, not on what they are actually saying...its very high school-ish and clique-ish...ignore them, like I do, or make jokes at their expense...yay my trolls are following me

True, there is nothing loving about rape, but sometimes in the context of how it occurred...did it happen before they were together; was it revenge; a misunderstanding...

Whitney My Love by Judith McNaught is an old bodice ripper where Clayton believes that Whitney his fiancee had been cheating on him and takes her back to his estate and rapes/force seducation is used...she does love him prior to that; hates him after; but other time realizes that it was a problem on both of their parts that this happened
