Name of this book? Possibly by Georgette Heyer, British historical romance book?

Hi. A long time ago someone recommenced me a book where the heroine has a stalker who is crazily in love with her and follows her wherever she travels, I'm not sure if the stalker is also the hero or not? It is definitely a British historical clean romance, something like Jane Austen but I know it's not by her, it could be by Georgette Heyer but I don't think so- does anyone know; it is driving me crazy... Thanks!

The only one that rings a bell that I've seen mentioned in this forum - and it's not Romance, rather it's Gothic - is Louisa May Alcott's A Long Fatal Love Chase. It's a story about obsessive romantic love as the husband stalks the heroine throughout the book.

I did not have time to post the other day. I'd have ot say that while it may be a Georgette Heyer - although there was not a lot of stalking going on in her books, there are many other 'clean' writers who were writing during that time period. Victoria Holt/Jean Plaidy, Barbara Michaels, Janet Aiken Hodge, Joan Wolf.

The heroine in this Georgette Heyer has an enemy who kidnaps her:

These Old Shades

One book by Jo Beverly comes to mind. The heroine has an admirer who goes so far as to arrange the death of her husband, and ruins her reputation with innuendo to leave her with no recourse other than marriage to him. (The Scandalous Countess)

Mary Balogh has romantic scenes in her books, but hs several stalkerish books. One is Heartless by Mary Balogh. The stalker was definitely not the hero, but had made the young woman's life a misery. Deceived is another book by Mary Balogh with an obsessed villain.

A Scandalous Countess

Deceived (Onyx)

Also, this one has a woman who I would say is stalked. Unfortunately it is a fairly commonplace theme in Regency novels.

A Compromised Lady (Harlequin Historical)

PamR- Thanks for the recs. So none of those stalkers are the hero? Is Mary Balogh closed door?

Sandra, No, the stalkers were all villains.

It's starts out as if it was Gothic Romance but it's really a Gothic Horror about obsessive sexual/romantic love that's truly about control and lack of independence of women. Though there is another far less toxic relationship for the heroine the book ends the way one would suspect with the line

"Mine first-mine last-mine even in the grave!"

RE Long Fatal Love Chase --That depends on what your definition of romantic is. The h has this attraction/repulsion thing going on with the main male protagonist. Part of her is attracted but the other part is outraged cause he does do some pretty horrible things to her. It is an excellent book and if you put Long Fatal Love Chase in the "search this forum" box there is some excellent discussions about it on the book discussions thread. (warning there are spoilers on that thread too)

I had never heard of this. My hat is off to the author. Just from reading the excerpt and some of the reviews, it is evident that this book could be used to educate young women in how to recognize men to avoid. I doubt I will ever read it because I read for entertainment, and to me, this is harrowing. Anne Stuart has some awful heroes, but this guy wins the trophy.

PamR- yeah, I don't think I can read it, it really turned me off to the book when in the description she likened meeting the "hero" to selling her soul to the devil- um, no thank you. If this guy is worse then some of Anne Stewart's heroes than he must be really really bad b/c some of Stuart's heroes are complete psychos who have no conscience whatsoever- at the very end of her books the heroes change but we all know that in real life, these types of men could never really love another. :(

The Poster With No Name- Thanks for telling me the name but just reading the description makes me not want to read it, the whole selling the soul to the devil thing creeps me out. Is this mentioned a lot? I'm not sure maybe I will read it... idk

so he must kill her then at the end?

end spoiler
