My Only Love finished today. She is a single mother in this historical. The book is centered around her being a social outcast and without a lot of affection from family. h's dad tries to marry her off to another social outcast in time for the younger daughter to marry a duke. The h is a strong women and is good at holding her own. Good drama without dark angst. Good read.

L. Burns says:
Another SEP (and one of my favorites by her!) - Dream a Little Dream (Chicago Stars / Bonner Brothers). The h is a widow with a little boy. Her late husband was a televangelist who swindled many people and took off with their $$. People in town hate her because they think she was in on it. In reality she's broke and homeless. This book is part of the "Chicago Stars" series, but these books are only loosely connected and it can be read as a standalone.

One more:
Beau Crusoe (Harlequin Historical) by Carla Kelly. Heroine disgraced her family because she eloped with a lower class man. Now she is a widow.

That Camden Summer by Lavyrle Spencer. Heroine is the divorcee who returns to her home town.
Morning Glory by LS too. h is known as "crazy" Dinsmore widow and living outskirts of the town with her children.
Call Me Irresistible: A Novel by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. The town people hate the h and want her out, because they think she caused the brake up between H and he's fiancee.

Highland Heat by Mary Wine has this theme. The h disgraced herself in the first book of the series, now is living a life of penance at the convent where her sister is training to be mother superior. She gets a chance to improve her situation by aiding the dowager Queen of Scotland escape to the man she wants to marry. She is captured by the H while doing this and he has always wanted her, so he keeps her.

I recently read Mackenzie's Mountain written in the 80's about a school teacher that arrives in a small town to teach the the tiny high school and goes to help the one drop out with surprising events when she meets his widowed half-native-American father, Wolf Marckenzie. Sweet, sexy hot and stubborn, teacher Miss Mary Elizabeth Potter, she sticks to her beliefs even when outcast from the town. This book is a keeper.

Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught.

The h and H met at her first coming out debut. Due to the betrayal of a "friend", the h is deemed "soiled" but the H thinks the h set him up. Fast forward a few years, the h is on the brink of poverty and her uncle decides he is done paying for her house's up keep. The h and H meet again and the H is a real jerk.

The Irish Devil (Irish Eyes) by Donna Fletcher is a KEEPER!

The Beauty and the Barbarian
Ireland in the Middle Ages-a land of both heavenly landscapes and hellish warfare. It is in this world that Lord Eric of Shankill is both feared and revered. His unstoppable rage on the battlefield has made him known as the "Irish devil." Little did he know that his greatest battle would be fought in his own heart...

Faith, daughter of Lord Terra is a healer who lives on the edge of society. Shamed by a cruel act of injustice, cast out by her father, she is the last one anyone would choose for a wife...But when the "Irish devil" is given his choice of Lord Terra's daughters, he demands Faith's hand in marriage. Against all obstacles, they struggle to overcome the pain of their pasts and realized the passion which both have desired-and denied-for so long...

Another GREAT one is The Maiden Bride by Rexanne Becnel

The Maiden Bride by Rexanne Becnel

Born in Shame...
All her life the ravishing Linnea de Valcourt has been reviled as the "cursed" daughter of Maidenstone Castle.

Redeemed by Deceit...
Now, to save her beloved twin sister from a terrible fate, she will sacrifice herself by impersonating her as the bride of conqueror Axton de la Manse. Yet how is it that she feels such fiery passion when she lies with this grim despoiler of her home?

A Hostage to Love...
Revenge for years of exile has driven the magnificent Axton to possess his archenemy's daughter -- little knowing that, as he imprisons her in his arms and drowns in her stormy sea-green eyes, he is throwing away the key to his soul. But Linnea's family, gathering forces to reclaim Maidenstone, will soon reveal their trickery. How can she hide from him the truth about his imposter bride?

The Poacher's Daughter
h was found on the roadside by a traveller (not a gypsy, but lives like one) when she was a toddler. He raises her as his daughter but because of her clothes and her condition when he found her, he knows she was well born and tries to raise her as a lady to the best of his ability. They settle in a farming village when she is a teenager and their caravan wagon breaks and they have no means to fix it. Her "father" is imprisoned for poaching, the villagers distrust her as "not one of them", the gentry hate her because she is proud and not like the other villagers, the H, who is also an outsider can't figure out how to treat her appropriately. Good book.

Another one that comes to mind is The Lady's Companion by Carla Kelly. After the heroine's father loses everything she decides to find an occupation and is ostracized by her family.

Pamela Morsi: Wild Oats - heroine is the *gasp* town divorcee who lives on the outskirts of town

If you want to walk on the expensive side, try One Good Turn (Signet Regency Romance) by Carla Kelly. The h was a 14 yr old when the British sacked the French held city of Talavera during the Spanish campaign in the Peninsular wars. She and her 12 yr old sister were both gang raped by British troops (the 12 yr old died there). The h has a son from this rape. She is driven out by her sister when she manages to get to her home and becomes a British camp follower out of necessity.

The British soldier who protected her during their marches sends her to his relatives after he dies. She is being shuffled off to another relative when the mail coach breaks down and she is picked up as she walks down the road by the H. He offers her a position as housekeeper since she did so well helping him with his young niece and nephew while traveling.

Reviewer Aus says:
Contemporary-Suspense Shades of Twilight - Linda Howard
The heroine is the outcast in her family, not helped by the fact they suspect she killed the hero's wife.

Historical Romance The Devil in Winter (The Wallflowers, Book 3) - Lisa Kleypas
The heroine has escaped her family, who she genuinely believes will kill her if she stays. She runs to the hero (they do not like each other) knowing she'll do whatever it takes to convince him to marry her and solve problems they both have.

Historical Romance The Duke - Gaelen Foley
The heroine is ruined by an attack one night, and becomes a courtesan. She and the hero fall in love, but she is in no social position to be married to a duke.

Military Suspense No Turning Back - Kaylea Cross
The heroine disappears at the beginning of the book, which leads to everyone - including the hero - suspecting she has terrorist ties. When she returns, she is imprisoned for some time, and then kept under watch after that.

I really enjoyed Seduction of a Highland Lass (The McCabe Trilogy Book 2)

Fiercely loyal to his elder brother, Alaric McCabe leads his clan in the fight for their birthright. Now he is prepared to wed for duty, as well. But on his way to claim the hand of Rionna McDonald, daughter of a neighboring chieftain, he is ambushed and left for dead. Miraculously, his life is saved by the soft touch of a Highland angel, a courageous beauty who will put to the test his fealty to his clan, his honor, and his deepest desires.

An outcast from her own clan, Keeley McDonald was betrayed by those she loved and trusted. When the wounded warrior falls from his horse, she is drawn to his strong, lean body. The wicked glint in his green eyes ignites a passion that will follow them back to Alaric's keep, where their forbidden love draws them deeper into the pleasures of the flesh. But as conspiracy and danger circle closer, Alaric must make an impossible choice: Will he betray his blood ties for the woman he loves?
