Since I really can not decide between the one or the other I'll name them both. Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Both of them are so .. so .. sigh.

ROARKE !!! :) In Death series by JD Robb

Are paranormal ok ?? It would mean wanting the paranormal world perhaps but hey .. that is fine .. :)

Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, Book 1) - Raphael.
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1) - Lucas
Branded by Fire (Psy-Changelings, Book 6) - Riley
Play of Passion (Berkley Sensation) - Drew

The Gamble - Holden Maxwell

I second Roarke. Valiant from Laurann Dohner's New Species series, titled Valiant.

Courting Midnight by Emma Holly.

Definitely Brodick in Ransom by Julie Garwood.
Also love Derek Craven in Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas.
Hmm, have to add Ace Keegan in Keegan's Lady by Catherine Anderson, too.
Almost any of Monica McCarty's highlanders, Tor MacLeod in The Chief: A Highland Guard Novel (Highland Guard Novels) being a particular favorite.
OMG, can't forget Callum MacGregor in Laird of the Mist (Warner Forever) by the wonderful Paula Quinn! Really, any of Paula's heroes.

Oh, and if paranormals are ok, I have to add a few from Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series:
Lachlain MacRieve - A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, Book 1)
Bowen MacRieve - Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (Immortals After Dark, Book 3)
Garreth MacRieve - Pleasure of a Dark Prince (Immortals After Dark, Book 7)

I tend to love the Lykae. :)

Honestly, ANY of her heroes are very alpha, fabulous. And I'd take any one of them... or several of them. Or all of them. But now I might be sounding greedy, and possibly shallow. ;-)

Also Conall from "go fetch". I loved him.

Can anyone recommend historicals where the heroine is distinctly downtrodden in her family situation? I do not mean books where she is working as some sort of domestic or as a governess. Jane Eyre would still qualify for this discussion because of her family situation.

Ann Stuart would qualifyRuthless (The House of Rohan)

Judd Lauren from Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh - best alpha of the series IMO

Without a doubt Kristen Ashley's Dream Man Series, all of them really hot alphas. For historical alphas, any of Sara McCarty's books and most of Monica McCarty's highlander books...and Maya Banks new highlander series. But nobody can beat Kristen Ashley's book for contemporary alpha males that make you swoon. Still in love with Hawk from Mystery Man.

I'm going to second JudyB's rec on Kristen Ashley. She absolutely knows how to write the hottest alphas going!

Weapon at Hand has several but Sir Allister is too "good" for my tastes. I love the devious and smart Tram.

Third for Roarke, In Death.

Ian from The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie (Leisure Historical Romance)

My fave alpha heroes - and they don't treat their heroines like marshmallow-for-brains halfwits or animated sex toys.

Lisa Marie Rice/Elizabeth Jennings - any of them. She doesn't write any non-brill heroes.
Shannon McKenna - her McClouds series guys.
Laurann Dohner - her New Species guys.
Lara Adrian - Midnight Breed
Tara Janzen - Steele Street men.
Kristen Ashley - 'specially her Colorado and Burg guys, and most 'specially Chace, Mike, Colt, Layne and Mitch, Hector, Vance, Brock from the other assorted series.

Check out forum Tea with the Bennetts where we are discussing Pride and Prejudice a few chapters at a time. Currently finishing discussion of book thru chapter thirteen. Saturday will start discussing chapters fourteen thru twenty one. Join us if interested!
P.S. not in the romance genre but the man that I wish were real (in mystery genre) is Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire (book based character not tv show depiction, tho I wouldn't turn him down either!)
