While crusing a library booksale this weekend, and thinking of letters in the alphabet for titles to fill the challenge I've already signed up for, I wondered how hard it would be to do an A-Z Author Challenge? Not the title of the book you read beginning with the letter, but the author's last name.

So, same guidelines as the title challenges; title is read within 2012, more than 100 pages long, and have fun! Anyone else want to play?

(Edited to change book to title in 2nd paragraph)

Hmm, I was thinking of last names, with the usual quibble on x, y & z--they can be anywhere in the name. Let's see how that goes. Thanks for playing!

As I started to enter the couple authors I have so far, I wondered, should I put in the titles? I did, but you don't have to.

I would love to play too! Just one quick question: the book has to be at least 100 pages long. I read a lot on my Kindle butN not all the Kindle books show number of pages!

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 9, 2012 11:03:57 AM PST
CyMac says:
Sometimes I go by word count. I don't understand KB's, sometimes a 16-page book with have 400 KB, crazy. But allromanceebooks(dot)com shows word count. Standard belief is that a page holds 250 words, so divide total by 250 to equal pages. Of course, that site only works if it's a rom title. :)

Can I suggest Hunter, Madeline for the Fairborne Quartet with the first book being released March 6th? I would join this challenge, but I am a Peace Corps volunteer and there is no way I can afford to buy all the books on my stipend that would be required. However I love Madeline Hunter and I think everyone should read at least one of her books!

KC says:
Thank you, CyMac, I think that would work as well as what I was going to suggest. I was thinking take a quick peek at the paper version listing in Amazon for a page count, but then I thought of the titles I've hit that are only in Kindle form, not in paper. Just doesn't work!

I think we'll just accept the reader's judgement; does it feel like more than 100 pages?

KC says:
W., you don't have access to a library? Major ouch! But you're more than welcome to join the challenge, and see how many different authors you can manage. I think I have a Madeline Hunter in my tbr pile, and will keep her in mind for my H author. Thanks!

I'd like to join in too! There were threads for the A-Z Author Challenge in 2010 and 2011, but I think most of that group has moved on, so I'm happy to find a new one!

KC's rules are pretty much the ones used there too, except that it could be the author's first or last name and Q was one of the letters that could be anywhere in the name. Will I get booted off the thread if I cheat and use the author's first name for a couple of my selections? There are several books coming up on my TBR pile that I really want to read, but the authors' last names start with the same letter.

I generally like to make my list in advance because it stops me from wasting precious reading time on deciding what book to read next. I don't read them in alphabetical order, but at least it narrows down the number I can choose from.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 12, 2012 10:50:21 AM PST
KC says:
Hi, LaurieM04, welcome & no, I don't worry about rules that much. I like to think of things as guidelines (until my boss tells me this is the rule...) Besides, what am I going to do; reach thru the computer and slap your fingers? Nah, this is meant to be fun!

I've noticed on the 2012 title challenge that several folks have listed titles they plan to read. Also ones that have already read quite a few. I used to think I was a fast reader; no more. Nor am I ever sure of what I'm going to read when (except certain books that I can't wait to get my mitts on), I just choose what sounds good, and if nothing does on top, start digging thru the tbr piles (bags, boxes, drawers, etc).

So do it whichever way works best for you; the only requirement; have fun!

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 12, 2012 11:03:02 AM PST
Thanks for the welcome and the clarification! I was mostly joking about getting booted off the thread, but I figured I'd better check first anyway. (The mental image of your hand coming through the computer monitor to slap my fingers made me LOL, by the way.)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to chatting with all of you about your picks! Hopefully we'll all discover some great new authors.

KC says:
Hi, Coyote, yes, I tend to do a lot of rereads as well (an In Death novel is always open at my place), and right now, I'm on a Maya Banks tear, so it is slowing me down on this challenge. But we have a whole year (except one month is almost gone already!!) to do this, so who knows, anything's possible!

Hello, KC,
Thanks so much for the Author Challenge, it was great. I'm trying to decide my next challenge; maybe completing series in alphabetical order, I have a few series in my TBR. You would think I would be knocking that pile down, but, as I've confessed in The Dear Book Buying Confessional, I'm definitely a 1-Click addict. When others post what they read, I gotta check it out, and know how that ends. At least, I'm not alone in my addiction!

A Anderson, Evangeline Charlie's Bargain 1/23
B Blake, Lexi The Dom Who Loved Me 1/19
C Carlo, Jianne White Wolf 1/15
D Devilin, Delilah 5 Ways 'Til Sunday 1/19

CyMac, I think you could do this challenge once a month with a hand tied behind your back! Wow, I see quite a few authors I don't know in your list, and the others. I sense danger lurking ahead (in Amazon 1 Click area! and the ubs!)

What a great idea! Do you mind? This is the only place I get to talk or read about books with other booklovers, and I would love to be able to keep going. I'll admit I was feeling a little lost when I was uploading more books last night, but your suggestion gave me a focus once again. I'm going to see if I can do that with the A-Z Title Challenge, too. Thanks!

BTW, what is the UBS? Google offered one definition as University Book Store; is it something all colleges have, a way to get books at a discount? TIA.
