Can't remember the title! Or the author, or the really the plot for that matter. *sigh*

B. Darcy says:
So, I read this book about 15 years ago (I was around 13 then, so forgive my lack of details) and I am trying to remember something that will let me find it again. I just spent three hours with my friend Google and have gotten exactly no where, I'm hoping someone on here can help!

This is what I rememeber:
Historical Romance (or Adventure with Romance, I don't remember any sex and it was in the adult section of the library, not the YA area), set sometime in the cowboy period of the American West, California/old Mexico.
30-ish man, owns a ranch/hacienda, younger woman/girl (16 to 20, I think) I'm pretty sure she is a Mexican native and he is white or Spanish aristos. I think that she pretends to be a boy and he finds out she is a girl when she is bathing in a pond. I seem to remember that the book cliffhanger-ed not long after that, so it might be part of a series (or I had to return it to the library and couldn't finish it.) There also might be a language barrier or she might be mute for some reason.

I've been racking my brains over this for days, so I may be inventing details or mashing multple books together. Please help?
