With all the hype on these boards about Kristen Ashley I took a chance and bought and read Sweet Dreams. I LOVED IT!!! I'm surprised at how much I liked it because it was soooo loooong. But there seriously was never a dull moment! I can't believe an author kept me hooked that long. This was my first book by her and now I'm looking for my next. I loved Tate's alphamaleness and his protectiveness I loved Lauren's strength and perseverance, I loved Jonas and I loved the crazy ex-girlfriend theme. Oh, and I loved that these characters were middle aged. Though I didn't like how Tate would constantly talk in pretty gory detail about having sex with the ex and others, and I didn't like how he'd have a temper tantrum Lauren would realize he's being a jerk but then he'd kiss her, they'd do it and she'd forgive him. Pretty much just that simple.

So with those details said, which Kristen Ashley do I read next? I've been bouncing back and forth between Lady Luck and At Peace. Or is there a different one I should go after?

Since you've read Sweet Dreams, I would suggest Lady Luck, which is "next". Tate's character is very important to Ty's, the hero in Lady Luck, character development and story line. You can read the first 6 chapters at www.Kristenashley.net, click on titles then find Lady Luck to get a good sample of Ty and Lexie's story.

Also loosely connected to Sweet Dreams and Lady Luck is The Gamble, which can be read after Sweet Dreams, but definitely takes places before Lady Luck. The h of The Gamble is in Lady Luck with a small cameo role.

The Rock Chick books are outrageously funny, and so far there are 6 (the latest one came out on Monday). If you want to try one of those, start with plain old Rock Chick.

I would not recommend reading At Peace until you realize that it's the second in a series, starting with For You. Many people don't like the h in For You, but the H (and h to some extent) are fairly prominent in At Peace. If reading out of order doesn't bother you, then go ahead with At Peace.

One thing I've noticed is that readers are ALL over the place in their like/dislike of Kristen Ashley's books. I've read all but one of 21/22-ish books, have my favorites, and then not so favorites. But I would still put her on my automatic buy list, no matter what.

ETA: All of her books are about the same length, BTW. Good price value for the quality and quantity.

HJ - Thanks so much. I didn't know that At Peace was the second in the series.

Lisa - Could I get Lady Luck spoilers? Not necessarily the who-done-it but how is Tate's character connected to Ty's? Do we get to see a lot of Tate, Laurie and Jonas?

I'm beginning At Peace and even knowing the spoilers, I love it. I can tell this is going to be a favorite. Very good characters. Yeah, Joe is a knuckle-dragger, like all her guys, but talk about a creamy center.

In the words of many of her characters, Kristen Ashley is the s***!

you should read Sweet Dreams it is the first in the series and then Lady Luck. Both so fantastic especially Lady Luck.

You don't see much of the characters from Sweet Dreams in Lady Luck but they do feature especially Tate. To give you a quick synopsis-Ty is just released from prison for a crime he didn't commit. He hooks up with the h to assist him in his revenge plot but their relationship quickly turns into something more. If you liked Tate you will love Ty. Soooo yummy.

You should also try her 'ghosts' series-Penmort Castle, Lacybourne Manor and Sommersgate House. The three aren't really connected so you could read any as a stand alone but all share the same theme-grand old homes with ghostly goings on. These three are among my favourites.

I have an even more basic question -- I'd never heard of Kristen Ashley before seeing her mentioned on this forum. If I wanted to try her out, which book would be the best place to start? Should I start with Rock Chick? Or one of her other series?

HJ Leonard says:
It depends on if you're looking for something more amusing, or more straightforward.

The Rock Chick series has many ROFL moments. The others have some, but not as in your face. Personally, I love the Rock Chick series (through book 5-book 6 was a bit of a disappointment).

The books Mystery Man and Wild Man are loosely connected to Rock Chick, and have similar stories. Then there is the Colorado series (The Gamble, Sweet Dreams, and Lady Luck). These are more 'second chance at love/life' types of stories.

ETA - Christine-just a quick disclosure...Most, if not all, of the heroes in Kristen Ashley's books are very 'rough-neck' Alpha types (bikers/bounty hunters/PIs, etc), with very Tarzan/He-Man behavior traits. Wasn't sure if you had picked that up from any of the threads/posts.

Thanks! I enjoy that kind of H every now and again. I think I'll toss one on my wishlist (otherwise, I'll forget about it). I bought a bunch of books over the weekend, so I'm set for a while.

At Peace is my favorite, but if you don't want to read out of order I'd start with Sweet Dreams and the rest of the Colorado Mountain books. I just started Lady Luck today and am loving it. Like, late to work loving it! The 1st Rock Chick was my least favorite so far but even that was worth the read. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

What about her futuristic trio, anyone read/recommend those?

Do you mean the FantasyLand series - Wildest Dreams, Golden Dynasty, and Fantasical? The first one is OK, the second really good, and the third is good (IMO). The second one is very intense and non-PC - and very popular on the barbarian warlord thread.

Posted on Nov 22, 2011 9:23:35 AM PST
Yeah, the Fantasyland series. I'm one of those that wants to read everything they have ever written if I like the author. I'm not crazy about time travel, though and the second one sounds like it is time travel. I don't want H/h to fall in love and then be zapped back to their time and reunite with the reincarnation of H/h.

What is great about KA is it doesn't matter in what order you read any of her books EXCEPT for the Rock Chick series. Them you should read in order. But if you just want to read, in my opinion, her BEST, I would read:

The Golden Dynasty (Fantasyland Series)
At Peace (The 'Burg Series)
Sweet Dreams
Lady Luck (Colorado Mountain Series)
Fantastical (Fantasyland Series)
Wild Man (Dream Man)

I also enjoyed all the Rock Chicks.
