To: My fellow Readers and Authors..(and The whole "AMAZON REVIEW MAFIA!").
I never wrote a thread before, but THIS subject caught my attention, and I HAVE been bullyed for liking a book/Author they didn't like. If WE don't stop Cyber Bullies, they WILL continue to bully, demean, hurt, destroy peoples lives without a thought. These are people that have NO respect for others. No love in their hearts, and reading its gazzilion comments, it scared me that this group of people may have ANY power on Amazon's reviews threads. We should report to Amazon ANY and ALL Cyber Bullies. This way, we can put a STOP to this ridiculous REVIEW MAFIA!
Wha??? Wha??? Yes, I know..I know..ridiculous people..*sighs*..
If you're an avid READER (like me), or a targeted SP Author...let's put a STOP to these people's cyber bullying. Let's NOT respond or even acknowledge their mean/jealous comments on our favorite books or favorite Authors. DO NOT STOP buying a book based on their notes/reviews. That's EXACTLY what they want from us. WHO are these people? Do WE want to BE like them? Petty, mean, and jealous individuals that have NO respect for a Human being? These are NOT (I'm sure of it!), people that we would accept in our homes or near our family, right? So WHY even acknowledge their negative comments? WHY not buy a book/movie/music based on WHAT they write? Exactly! NO! Let's not give any more power to these people here on Amazon, and at any website. Let's STOP this immature game of callig Authors/Readers names, of writing hurtful and damaging things, of letting them WIN. If each one of us, book lovers, or Authors (SP or not) ignore their reviews and continue to read and buy our fave books, they'll stop. Like children, when they stop getting the attention, they will stop.

I follow many Book Blogs and THOSE are worth my time and loyalty. Books were created for us to read, and dream/travel with our eyes open..not this awful bullying!!
Look for awesome Book Blogs (www.maryse.net and aestasbookblog.com are my two favorites), and have fun. They're free, and you will only meet awesome readers that want to chat about your favorite books. No wasting our time anymore by giving "The Mafia" our attention!

Now...to ALL OF THE "AMAZON NEG. REVIEW MAFIA"!...

I'm sorry, but you're a very, very ignorant and mean group of people. Who gives YOU the right to be the authority in what's right or wrong? On What or Who's good enough or not? Are you God?
Please, get a real job, find another hobby (obviously reading IS NOT yours), or take a vacation. The world is already a very difficult, sad place. We do NOT need the cyber bullying, evil comments from someone like you, that probably spends hours, and days just to be MEAN AND BASH other people's work, passion, life. Find something TRULY meaningful to do with your life.

Have a great day fellow readers! Let's enjoy our reads now..;)

As someone who has been pushing this issue at Amazon for a couple of weeks now, it is heartening to see both readers and authors coming out and publicly stating that they have fallen victim to these vile individuals.

Only once we see more of this will people finally begin to accept that it is a genuine problem and hopefully. Amazon may actually begin looking at ways of combating it.

Ah, I see the Amazon trolls have decided to bombard the Romance forum.

Good luck with that.

OP you don't even have any reviews under your profile so how are you being review bullied?

From your profile the only book you like is 50 Shades of Gray because that's the ONLY one you've reviewed and there's no comments or email so how are people bullying you?

I'm happy that we, as readers, should have a voice too. I'm hoping that if we bring this problem to Amazons attention, they will block those that are only hurting us all.
Let's hope and continue to enjoy our books..;)

Actually, no. I've read gazzilions of books, and I DID get bullyied and had to change my ID...I normally don't write anything. But, I did write praises to favorite Authors in my old ID, and people started bashing me, the book, the Author, etc.
Please, read above AGAIN, and STOP with the angry comments like the one you JUST WROTE to me.
Even if my friends, or kids were being bullied here, and not me, I would still write the above.
I DO NOT need to give any more explanations...I'm back reading my book of the day. Sorry..no more time to give you attention. Sorry..:)

These are spillovers from the KBF thread of a similar name, Sunflowers. They are trying to drag their controversy over here.

Thank goodness the Romance Forum readers are too smart to continue to engage.

I have now clicked yet another ignore button and encourage you to do the same so that we can all get back to discussing romance books, as is our mostly norm. :)

You need to calm down. How was I angry? You need to find another avenue to vent because you're getting no headway here.

The only time people seem to go after reviewers in praise reviews are if they suspect they're shills. You might give off that vibe.

Kate Barley says:
There have been many well documented instances of fake 5 star reviews by SPs. You are essentially saying that some reviewers are deliberately leaving mean and false reviews for self published books that discourage people from buying? What would be the purpose of that? How do you know that these are not their true opinions? Do you have any links to substantiate your claim? Other than your own personal experience? If you don't have any proof, then I am not sure how posters can take your claim seriously.

It concerns me that whenever someone leaves a negative review that they are accused of cyber bullying the author. SPs, as do all authors, need to remember that reviews are for others readers to make an informed buying decision. It is not a personal statement against the author and I think the word "cyber bully" is used indiscriminately and inappropriately.

Also since you are inexperienced in starting a thread then I would kindly like to give you some unsolicited advice. Insulting posters <<ignorant and mean.... Are you god?>> is not usually a good way to inititiate a discussion about a topic. All the excessive capitalization and exclamation points is quite overly dramatic and unnecessary. We are smart enough to get the point without them.

ETA: Added the second paragraph.

I still find it amazing that in spite of the fact that so many people are finally coming out and saying they have been targeted by these bullies, there are people still saying it doesn't go on.

That's because most people on the forums think the so-called "victims" of this "review mafia" are actually either Self Promoters or friends and family of Self Promoters.

Self Promoters hold a special position of near universal hatred on these forums. I suspect that you've been conned by some of these people who have bombarded the forums with posts about their poorly written, poorly edited fanfiction, which they try to pass off as books worth paying money for.

I have to say all the comments about 'bullying' have not actually mentioned any instances of bullying. Where is this coming from? What I find a bigger problem, as people have already mentioned, are the dubious 5 star reviews for self published novels. I have been caught a number of times as I have purchased books based on their great reviews and have been sorely disappointed. While I accept that not everyone is going to have the same opinion as me, generally it becomes quite obvious that the reviews could not have been genuine as the writing is far to poor to warrant it. This is something I would like to see dealt with.

If what you are saying is true about authors who have been targeted & harassed by reviewer bullies, then please provide links to prove this. Otherwise you are spouting a bunch of wild accusations with no true meaning. I want to see the reviews that reviewers are leaving for self published authors which are bullying them. Again, evidence please.

However I have seen plenty of instances where readers have been duped by shills, fake 5 star reviews, and self promotion. I have seen plenty of evidence of this type of behavior and can provide evidence - can you say the same?

Well, **I'm** "just sayin'" that when one starts a thread, one should provide enough info to substantiate that thread's purpose. If that means pointing to an existing thread, elsewhere, then so be it. Expecting readers to magically discern the existence of that information is ridiculous.

I, too, am "just sayin."

Frankly, the offenders of abuse such as the one you mention are far more easily identified and managed by Amazon than the shill reviews posting to artificially inflate the rating of books so, no, this issue doesn't concern me to that extent.

BTW - my reviews are frequently down-voted and otherwise treated badly by commenters because I tend to be extremely conservative in awarding stars to books and to be extremely frank about not liking a book. So I guess you folks would count me as part of this mythical mafia or something.

Sorry - whining about negative reviews doesn't build any sympathy from me - a reader and PURCHASER of many many books. In fact, if an author or his/her minions attack negative reviews, that supports my inclination to write off that author and all his/her works. The best way for an author to handle negative reviews is to ignore them and to instruct his/her minions to ignore them as well.

Whining will win you few if any fans and will definitely not win me as a reader/purchaser.

If someone could give me a link to where I can buy another 'ignore this customer' button I'd appreciate it. My current one has completely worn out.

look like you are an author or friend of an author huh. You cannot post on reader's forum. As it is there are so many indie books all with 5 star reviews that it makes it impossible to have an unbiased and objective review and to find good books. They are all 5 stars but after I buy them and read them they are barely 1 star !!! I lost so much money but no more. So authors cannot spam reader's forum so they have their friends and relative review their books. That practice has to stop . It is unethical and I won't buy from an author who uses that practice. I WANT AN HONEST REVIEW FROM AN IMPARTIAL READER.

Oh sheesh - just realized that "PuppetMasterMind" is that old troll formerly know as "star....."

I thought Amazon had already reprimanded him/her for a lot of posting misbehavior. Guess s/he is hiding behind a new member name now.

That ignore button is gettin' quite a work-out on this thread.

Athenadsb: No. I'm not an Author, or even family/friend of one. I'm a reader of Romance just like you. I didn't realize I was posting on the wrong place (Romance Forum?). I apologize. I also agree with you. I've spent a lot of money on books that are not worth it. That's why instead of bashing, I started following different book blogs that at least has unbiased reviews, so I wouldn't waste more money.

Your post isn't really helpful. If there was genuinely an issue with bullying reviewers I think the people in this forum would be interested but you haven't actually referred to anything except a review of your own book. And the BBA thread deals with a completely different problem. So which is it? A group of nasty readers leaving unfair reviews? Or is it authors interfering with genuine reviews because the actual problem here isn't actually clear to me.

And if you refuse to 'waste your time' dragging it all out for us how can you genuinely expect people to accept that there is a problem.

Firstly, not my name.

Secondly, you are the one making accusations, therefore it is surely up to you to substantiate it. It's not my 'responsibility' to do anything.
