Final fantasy XII is my favorite JRPG and oblivion owned my life for a 100 hours as the western winner

My top favorites: LoZ: A Link to the Past
Breath of Fire II
Chrono Trigger
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

(yes, I admit it, I'm an old-school gamer, so what? If anyone could name a modern RPG that's anywhere near as good as the above ones, I'd be willling to give it a shot...)

The SNES rpg collection as a whole is probably the best out there, despite some of them being terrible. Dragon Quest V & VI (the DS remakes unless you can play the original Japanese versions), EarthBound, Final Fantasy II & III, Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario RPG, Breath of Fire I & II and ChronoTrigger are ones that always come up whenever friends and I discuss rpgs

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, end of story for me. No other game has ever come close to how much I loved that game. The atmosphere was flawless (gameplay problems aside).

Oblivion, or Dragon Age Origins. JRPGs its FF XII, all three of those games over 150 hours to max them, good times...

I forgot Dark Cloud: 2! I LOVED that game.

Baldurs Gate by Bioware. Bioware makes the best RPGs.

An old 1980s-era title called Wasteland. Amazing game for its time. I also revere the first two Fallout games. Best atmosphere I've ever experienced in a video game.

I would have to say the entire KOTOR series hands down!

Morrowind is my favorite RPG of all time. Deus Ex is also great. Oblivion might have taken Morrowind's place if they hadn't made so many mistakes with it, mainly the gimping of any ability to fly, and the silly scaling enemies that level up with you, so that eventually every bandit on the road is decked out in full daedric armor. Morrowing was the most in-depth and replayable RPG I've yet played, and I've been playing them since the 1980's.

best RPG for me...

i say the fallouts... E. Markle said it right... post war, anything goes, survival game... great fun from the first to the next new vegas one... i know its going to be great... graphic and gritty. the way you know it would be.

Baldur's Gate 1
- At the time it came out I thought this was amazing. Replayed it many times. Prefer it to Baldur's Gate 2 (which seems to be an unusual opinion). What I like is that it is a near perfect implementation of D&D.

The game I have played the most is Oblivion. My character has 1000 hours and has still not completed it. (PC - mods add a lot.)

Xenogears Without a doubt. The music, The story... Just imagine if they were to fully intergrate the remaining pieces of the game that squaresoft screwed them out of.. It would be THAT much better.

Please stop listing Zelda games as RPGs. They're Action-Adventures, you clods!

The best JRPGs are Final Fantasy V, VI, Dragon Warrior VIII, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, as well as Shining Force I-III.
The best CRPGs are in my opinion Fallout, Temple of Elemental Evil and Eye of The Beholder.
And the best tabletop game will always be, to me, 2nd Ed. D&D.

Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights (I & II), and Baldur's Gate are three of the best RPG's around. Can't wait for Dragon Age II to come out hopefully in March 2011.

R. B. McCord says:
To those of you touting FF 12 & 13 as the best ever.... Please realize that many other rote beat them in the story, character, and extra's area. Mass effect, the Tales series, and even older FF's do it better. The only real improvements I have seen from 12 and 13 have been graphical. And personally I would like to see SE work less on graphics and more on story, character, and reliability than eyecandy.
