Care to give your top pick? Let's just type in the title if we could. I'll go first.

2001 A Space Odyssey

A tie between "2001" and "Alien".

Best One? Can't pick one?? Let's go for one. The single best. If possible....

I'm torn between Metropolis and Dark City (directors cut). If I *had* to choose one, it'd be Dark City.

There are a lot of top contenders (including all the ones mentioned above, though I prefer the theatrical release version of "Dark City") but one that I've been thinking about a lot recently is that great enigma of the arthouse crowd, "Last Year At Marienbad", a brilliant piece of work because it's not obviously an SF film, but which is based on some ideas about virtual reality derived from "The Invention of Morel". Very forward looking, the movie and the source book.

Bob....Best Science Fiction film ever? Oh God that is really impossible. I can break down my favorites by decades as follows: 1950's Classic B/W, "The Thing" (1951), Classic color, " Forbidden Planet" (1956), 1960's, 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968), 1970's, "Alien" (1979), 1980's, "Blade Runner" (1982), 1990's, ( here's where it gets really hard, the 1990's had a plethora of absolutely brilliant Science Fiction films that may be the best of the bunch) "12 Monkeys" (1995), " The 13th Floor" (1999), "Dark City" (1998), 2000's, "Minority Report" (2001).
I'll bite the bullet and go with my all time favorite Science Fiction film of all time....."12 Monkeys"

@Bob:

Alright then, I'll pick just one. "Alien".

Without hesitation, my favorite has always been Day the Earth Stood Still. I am so distraught that they chose to remake it.

Day the Earth Stood Still (original). second Best: The Time Machine (original)

Most villified sci-fi movie that I still kinda like: Zardoz (director: John Boorman; actor: Sean Connery).

Now THAT deserves its own thread!

Most vilified for me would be a tie between "Battlefield Earth" and "The Passion of the Christ"

"Best?" That's too confining... in chronological order my top 5:

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('56)
The Birds (OK, so maybe it's not SF... sue me)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('78)
Alien ('79)

As runner-up The Day After Tomorrow, not because it was a good movie (special effects A+, movie D) but the scene with the flying billboard taking out the FOX news reporter still makes me laugh out loud.

It's not a scientific question.

It's "If somebody put a gun to your head and said name the single best sci-fi movie of all time".

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 24, 2008 5:00:23 PM PST
We all know that there is no real answer to this, but out of courtesy to the poster I will say The Best Science Fiction Film of All Time is THE MATRIX.

THERE IS NO SPOON.

Lol. Right. There really isn't an answer. I realized this a long time ago. It's just like saying, "what's your *favorite* movie" which at least makes explicit the inherently subjective nature of such judgements, but that's a mighty difficult question too. But asking for *Best* is more interesting.

There is a spoon.

Top three, in order:
1. Blade Runner
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Metropolis

Max Varazslo says:
For me, it's 1) "The Blob" (1958), 2) "Queen of Blood" (1966), and "Not of This Earth" (1957) -- three low-budget gems brimming with real imagination.

I wonder, do younger people like 50's and early 60's sci-fi classics as much as we older posters? Or is this a generational thing?

Most 20-30ish people I know think of Star Wars and Close Encounters as vintage, classic sci-fi.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 25, 2008 5:29:34 AM PST
I so love Close Encounters but I would also have to say Blade Runner, Dune (David Lynch), and Somewhere in Time.
