i know the moon affects the tides but what does a full moon have to do with it ?

why does sunlight bouncing off the moon have any connection to the height of tides ?

Doctor Who says:
Because of geometry. The full moon means that the sun and moon are aliened and therefore their tidal forces are aligned.

Mike W says:
The sun also has a tidal effect on us. When the Sun, Earth and Moon are in alignment, the two tidal effects reinforce each other. This happens at full moon and new moon.

Re OP: Both above responses are correct. The moon has a larger effect on the earth than does the sun, because it is so much closer. At new and full moon, the tidal forces add; the higher tides are called spring tides. At the quarter moons, the tidal forces are at right angles to each other, so do not add; the resulting lower tides are called neap tides.

===========================

Not optics. Gravitational forces explain the tide.

Doctor Who says:
The position of the moon matters. Since tides are greatest when the sun and moon are aligned that is when tides are greatest. When the sun and moon are aligned that is also the case of the new and full moon, so they are related.

The light on the moon as seen from Earth is a result of its position.

"Full moon" is recognisable, and any educated person would know why it means higher tides anyway.

what's on the right always increases, (whether it's the lighted portion or the darkness) so with that factoid you always know what phase is next.

yes, well, our neighbors to the south are all upside down, unless they actually believe that the Galaxy spins counterclockwise. Hurumph!

A customer says:
werranth - The Germans say "abnehmen" (waning) or "zunehmen" (waxing), and you can distinguish the two from the curve. If the limb curves on the left it looks like a small "a". If it curves on the right it looks like the first stroke of a "z".

But as Mike said, only if you are on the bottom half of the globe, as my Kiwi friend refers to it.

He won't care, he'll just deny it.

When I was at the solar site at Learmonth, W. A. we Americans were out-numbered and they surely didn't think of themselves as being on the bottom half. lol

Doctor Who says:
It has nothing to do with poles. "Up", "down", "top", "bottom", "charmed", and "strange" have no meaning with respect to the earth except by conventional language. There is no physical reason for maps to be orientated with north up.

They don't really have anything to do with quarks either, except as a human made label.

It does...depending on your point of view.
