Gday all,

There is a lot of talk about the end of the world in 2012, supposedly based on a Mayan prophecy or prediction.

Of course, that is completely UNTRUE!
There is NO SUCH PROPHECY or prediction at all.
Just a calendar ticking over
from 12.19.17.19.19.19,
to 13.0.0.0.0.0.

No prophecy.
It's just a media beat-up, but so many people BELIEVE it!

If there WAS such a prophecy. we'd get it quoted endlessly - instead we get NO prophecy, but endless CLAIMS and STORIES.

Did YOU fall for this silly story?

Q, thanks. I dismissed it out of hand. I figured they just ran out of rock to carve on. Indeed why would a bloody awful people of human butchery have any insight to the future?

Pathfinder says:
There are a total of 4 calendars, that end on the same date. The pyramid has a calendar, another calendar in China, and a 3rd one in the Middle East, and the Mayan. It was on PBS or the history channel a while back.... In either case, it's a bunch of baloney....

Gday,

Pathfinder says:
<<<<There are a total of 4 calendars, that end on the same date. >>>>

That's just the problem !
The Mayan Calendar does NOT end.

It ticks over from 12.19.17.19.19.19 to 13.0.0.0.0.0 IIRC.

It's the media beat-up that it "ends".
It doesn't "end" at all.

Any more then my Dilbert calendar "ends" on December 31st.

<<<<China, and a 3rd one in the Middle East, and the Mayan>>>>

Can you give some details :
When do they allegedly "end" ?

TS: Er, not in the SCIENCE media, except to debunk the idea.

Can someone tell me what the "Sun being in alignment with the Galaxy" means? How is this possible?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 16, 2011 11:43:55 PM PST
Gday,

werranth413 says:
<<<The Sun will be in alignment with the Galaxy on 21 Dec 2012. >>>>

Complete nonsense.
No special alignment takes place on that date.

You just named two things - two things are always aligned.

And how can the sun align with a galaxy?
What does that even MEAN?
Considering the sun is one star in the middle of a galaxy.

It's like saying that you will be aligned with the planet earth.
It's like saying that one specific tree will align with the Amazon.
It's silly nonsense, sorry.

<<<<Are you saying that the Maya didn't know this? It's a bunch of baloney? I mean, really? Because, even when you know it's going to happen, can you figure out how they did it 1200 years ago? >>>

Yes, it's a complete bunch of baloney.
There is no special alignment at all.
Just a lot of people repeated silly claims over and over.

Gday,

SinSeeker says:
<<<Can someone tell me what the "Sun being in alignment with the Galaxy" means? How is this possible? >>>

Yah -
it's complete and utter nonsense.

The sun is one star out of billions of stars within the galaxy - how can a star line up with a galaxy?

He probably meant lines up with the center of the galaxy.
But it's ALWAYS aligned with the center of the galaxy - ANY two points are ALWAYS aligned.

Some people WANT to believe that something special will happen - that's what it boils down to. I've seen a lot of end-of-the-worlds come and go now. My guess is that werranth is a young person who is just experiencing their first end-of-the-world :-) Aww ... how sweet ...

Gday,

werranth413 says:
<<<<The Earth and the Sun and the midplane of the Galaxy will line up in a straight line. It's not rocket science. >>>>

The MIDPLANE of the Galaxy?
Hahahahaha...

The midplane is infinite in size - at least as big as the galaxy.

The Sun and Earth ALWAYS line up with that plane.

EVERY two objects in the Galaxy ALWAYS line up with the midplane.

This is total nonsense.

There is NOTHING special on that date.

Which is why werranth CANNOT provide ANY evidence for these crazy claims.

Q.

Posted on Dec 17, 2011 12:02:27 PM PST
werranth's claim is like saying that :

he and I will line up with the earth !

Of COURSE we do - a line between him and me MUST interesect the earth.

It's like saying me and my dog will line up with the SKY.

What a load of nonsense.

My late cousin Maud Makemson, professor of astronomy at Vassar, is responsible for much of what is known about the Mayan calendar and its correspondence with the Julian and Gregorian calendars. She was a scientist and intellectual. She would be appalled to see her work being perverted by crackpots to predict the end of the world. What foolish garbage!

Posted on Dec 17, 2011 12:33:29 PM PST
Furthermore -

Any alignment of the Earth and Sun happens ONCE a YEAR, by definition.

Q.

Posted on Dec 17, 2011 12:36:16 PM PST
I think werranth meant an alignment with the Galatic Center.

Except for 2 problems :

It DOES NOT line up at all - it's several degrees out.

This NON-alignment happens EVERY YEAR.

Honestly -
how can people believe this crap ?

The 2012 Apocalypse is a lie by people trying to make money. See http://www.2012hoax.org/

This is pseudo-scientific crap, brought to us by the very same authors who tried to sell us books on "alien gods" (late 60s) "pyramid Power" (late 70s), "crystals" (late 80s), and the "millenium apocalypse" (late 90s). Every ten years they reinvent themselves to market to the next generation of new-age and trailer-trash folks looking for "answers", and sell a lot of books in the process. The scam goes like this - start a rumor and get your buddy to write about it. Now write a book about what your buddy wrote about - now it's "documented evidence". Now your buddy writes about what you wrote about - now it's "established fact, cited in ---". The cycle contiunes.

They also love to point out that the mayans foresaw the arrival of the conquistadores, even giving an exact date. Utter nonsense. They had a prophesy that their pale god would return one day (not unlike Jesus). No date mentioned, no indication that the god was coming to wipe them out. Cortez came, heard the myth, and portrayed himself as that god, then destroyed them. But no date was given... that myth was invented centuries later.

While we are on the subject... Washington told lies, had ivory teeth, and never cut down his mother's cherry tree. Betsy Ross had nothing to do with the design of the American flag. Duck quacks echo. Just because you repeat a lie until everyone believes it doesn't make it true. (points at wikipedia).

In reality, it's all tripe. The mayan calendar flips over, just like ours. Pure and simple.

The tragic thing is that the media (even the History channel - wtf) supports these fraudsters and promotes their "ideas". How many people are going to quit their jobs, spend their life savings, even commit suicide in anticipation of this non-event?

Posted on Dec 17, 2011 2:35:34 PM PST
Dilbert predicted that I would lose my job and be replaced by lower-wage workers from a distant land. I was laid off and my job outsourced to India.

My Dilbert calendar ends in 2012. Ergo, the world must be ending.

Just sayin'.

werranth413: "The Earth and the Sun and the midplane of the Galaxy will line up in a straight line. It's not rocket science."

Not rocket science - and NOT TRUE either.

The earth/solar system crossed the Galactic Plane in 1998 - and won't cross it again for another 64 million years. The earth DOES "cross the Galactic Equator" TWICE EVERY year.

Funny how none of thes "corresponding calendars" seemed to exist (or weren't decyphered) until the "prediction of the Maya" came out - and so did all the "corroborating evidence". Why did this happen...?

IT SELLS BOOKS. In 2013, I predict a slew of books explaining "why The End didn't come" - probably due to "positive waves"*, "positive energy" or 'That Which Is' giving mankind a "second chance to become One with the Cosmos" or some other claptrap...

*yes I am a big fan of 'Oddball'

The Sun and Earth always line up with the plane of the Galaxy? Anyone can check this if they know the night sky.

I never made any crazy claims, but you claim the Sun and Earth always line up with the midplane.

Unless there's been surprising new data, you're way off.

We rose upward through the midplane 4 million years ago. We won't cross downward through it for 29 million years.

Has there been a new calculation?

Yog-Sothoth says:
"Crossing the Galactic equator" was referred to from "earths perspective". Sometimes referred to as "entering the Dark Rift", which more-or-less corresponds with the Galactic equator (because of the concentration of dust). The Solar System "entered alignment" with this rift about 1984; crossed the "center" in 1998, and "emerged from the Rift" in 2011. All of these descriptions are "as seen/perceived from earth".

Because of the inclination of the ecliptic to the Galactic equator, the APPARENT crossing is not the same as the ACTUAL crossing. So werranth413 is right: we Aligned with the Galactic center" (crossed the Galactic plane) about 4 million years ago; won't do it again for about 29 million years - NOT in 2012.
