According to this, Episodes VII, VIII, and IX are probably going to be an all new story and an an Avengers-style movie universe (i.e., movie spin-offs for individual characters):

Kathleen Kennedy, who has worked with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, has been put in charge of over-seeing the new Star Wars movies:

I'm optimistic about it.

Off topic: This new deal with also gives Disney the rights to Indiana Jones.

Timothy Zahn, who kick started the Star Wars EU, weighs in about the new trilogy:

I am also wondering how the EU will fit in with the new trilogy. Will the new trilogy wipe out the entire EU? Will it cherry-pick some ideas while still providing an original story?

I'm hoping for option B: cherry pick ideas while providing original story.

Important to me unless they want to wreck my universe: Keep the family tree structure intact.

The previous post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe is now going to be an alternate universe.

I'm glad about this. I enjoyed the Zahn trilogy when I was a teen, but too much of the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe stuff really lost sight of what made Star Wars great.
