I saw the entry by Steve Perry on the FTLOSM cd, where he has the people named that supported him, and he has "Sham and her mama" listed there. Is Sham his daughter?

I have heard her called Shamria, wasn't his mother's name Maria or mary, could this be a combo of 2 names, perhaps Sh for Sherrie, and Maria for his mother, with Sh-then the the m and a turned around to a and m and the last 3 letters in his mothers name of Maria to be- ria, so you get Sh-a-m-ria.

Could Sherrie be the mother? I mean what a strange name, it sounds foreign or a name that is interposed between 2 separate names, as in Sherrie and Maria.

Also, go to There is a person there who says it is her in the photo with Steve. She has long dark hair, and I have seen this photo before on the Internet. I have it saved to my pc. so I could send it to anyone who wants it. She won't say who she is, as I have asked her. She has no personal information on her profile. She also has hundreds of celebrities for her friends, over 1000 now! This is courious I think. Could this be the daughter?

No the mom is not Sherrie. Sham is over 30yrs old and Steve is a grandfather. He has been photograhed with them (and those pics were on the net for a bit not w/steves permission, since they have been taken down as well)but his daughter has been photographed w/him at the Monster Premiere. He also was pic'd w/Patty Jenkins and her grandmother at the premiere as well.
HIs mom's name was Mary yes.
Go to google type in Steve Perry Monster Premiere- and the lady w/the long curly hair and pant suit is his daughter.
She was also periodically with him during the FTLOSM tour- she was in Puerto Rico with him for the fan trip.

Yup, all correct according to what I know. She's about 37, has at least 2, maybe 3 kids. I've seen the "Monster" movie premiere photos; someone said he took her on tour to Japan, too. I know more, have emailed my contact/source to ask how much I can reveal, last year he asked me not to with some things but she's obviously "out" now so I don't think I have to keep it seceret anymore. She goes by "Sham", that's not her full first name, it starts with an A: is very unique, almost exotic/foreign, but I think it's very pretty. Steve had nothing to do with naming her as he was not informed of her existence for some time. I'm just very happy that he has a relationship with her & his grandkids!

Hi. Could you send me the pic of his daughter? I have been trying to locate her. Her name is Shamila. My family was friends with her mom and shamila and I use to hang out back in 1986ish. Im 38 now so the age is about right.

Once and for all, her full first name is Aashamela, she generally goes by Sham. Somewhere in these discussions someone posted that she is 37, has 2-3 kids, and lives in or near Fayetteville NC. You probably know more about her than any of us do! There are photos on the web, Steve took her to the premiere of the movie "Monster", starring Charlize Theron. She has long, dark brown very curly hair. Read through all these Steve Perry discussions and you should be able to glean something, I don't have the site for the premiere photos on hand. Good luck, and tell us if you know how old she was when she & Steve "connected"!

Jan Odegaard says:
Her full first name is Aashamela; she usually goes by Sham. Sherrie is NOT her mother! If, as has been posted, Sham is 37 Steve would have been 21-22 at the time, years before Sherrie. Steve didn't "meet" his daughter until sometime after she was born, so couldn't have had anything to do with naming her. Yes, his mother's name was Mary. She does have very dark brown curly long hair, freckles. I highly doubt the MySpace thing, but I don't know. As for photos, there are several of him and her at the premiere of the movie "Monster", starring Charlize Theron---and Patty Jenkins, the director, and Patty's grandmother, etc. A more recent photo was online, taken by some tourists without his permission; he asked them to STOP and the photo was pulled from the web---but not before I printed a copy. All we see is Steve, a stroller, and Sham from the back.

Hi Jeffery, if you knew her then you must know that she is reported to have graduated form Terry Sanford High in Fayetteville, N.C. and it was also said that Steve attended. If she is 37 now, the year of graduation must be around 1989 or 90. Maybe you could check into that since your family is friends with her mom, and could you tell us somthing about her mom?

Oh, I would love that! I'm so sorry I can't reciprocate with the one I have but I only got it by giving my word that I would never share it with anyone. (Maybe it's the same one!)
Now that I have your email I'll get in touch and we trade thoughts. Thanks!

I did respond to your offer of a photo of Sham, but don't think I ever got it. I have others now, as well as her husband and 2 boys (& one resembles Steve!). I still know nothing about her mom, have not seen or heard a single thing.
In her high school yearbook she's listed as Shamila Kay _____ (last name, which I was not given). I've already posted her full first name, which was given to me by a drummer in L.A. who knew all members of Journey and is still a friend of Jeff Scott Soto, who sang with them for a few months to finish a tour when Steve Augeri got the bronchial infection. My "real" name is Janet, but I've been Jan since 8th grade (1963!), and that's how I'm listed in my high school years books.
She will be 40 in August 2010, so Steve's mom, Mary, did know of her granddaughter, since she died Dec. 4, 1985, when Sham was 15; it's been said several times that Steve met his daughter when she was 13: 1983.
Could you please email me the photo? I'd be most appreciative, and can share more info that I will not post on a public forum. Thanks!

Hi! I don't think I've received that photo you have yet! Could you send it again, please? I've seen several now, so I wonder if it's the same. Last summer my PC took a dump, I lost a bunch of emails, and had to get a new hard drive. Then this January I got a baaaad virus (in spite of anit-virus protection), so had to get that taken care of. At least there's no chance I passed it on, my PC just froze up and I couldn't do anything with it.
QUESTION: can anyone tell me why, when, whatever---the Journey logo is a scarab?? No one seems to know, but it has to be out there somewhere.

Posted on Apr 8, 2010 7:44:16 PM PDT
About the scarab logo: the scarab beetle appears on the majority of the Journey album covers because the bands former manager, Walter "Herbie" Herbert decided upon using this artwork for Journey,s album covers, although there seems to be no explanation for why this was done. The impression is that Journey's former manager did this in an effort to demonstrate to the band that he was the only person who had any authority regarding decisions pertaining to Journey.

I have seen several photo's of Sham. She is a beautiful woman. When you see her you know who her father is she resembles Steve so much. Her life is private and Steve has kept his family life private so I don't feel it is okay to share pics of his immediate family.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 14, 2010 4:22:44 PM PDT
I agree with you Ziggy. Steve is a very private person, and if he does not want that information out on the internet then we need to respect him. His life is private for a reason.

Did I respond to this? I now have several photos of Sham and her family, some I can share and some I can not. I'd love to see what you have if you'll send it, and I'll share info that I won't share on a public forum like this. My email is, and I look forward to hearing from you. (If I haven't already! My list of Perry Pals is incomplete, out of order, and diisorganized. What I want to do is make an index card on each one with all the personal

Jan Odegaard says:
Thanks for the info on the scarab, but it really doesn't explain much, does it? I posted that question in a few places and no one knew! I thought I read it somewhere a long time ago but couldn't remember.

I know that Steve guards his privacy like Ft. Knox and why, and I respect that. I have photos of Sham, but do not share any that have not appeared on the internet. He does guard his family like a Papa Bear! I'm just so delighted that he has them, being an only child who's lost all grandparents and both parents now. I've been told he does (or did) have cousins in Hanford, where he was born.
The first person to tell me anything about her is a drummer in L.A. and a friend of one of Journey's former lead singers after Steve (though he knew them all, but least of all Steve). I have never heard anything about her mother (it is NOT Sherrie!); I know Sham's full name (and Perry is no part of it), where she lives, her husband & 2 boys (one who looks like Steve!): they are low-key, down to earth, religious, just "regular folk", and she seems to be a very fun person! A friend found her on Facebook but I have serious doubts that it is her.
The drummer who first told me about her said that her mother did not tell Steve about her for a LONG time, which seems curious. I've heard several times that he first met her on her 13th birthday (August 1983). He did say that when Steve's friends saw her they told him,
"Man, don't even bother with blood tests---she is yours!" The photo he sent me, which I can not share, is when she was a teenager; has the curly hair but much shorter that those we've all seen, and the freckles!! Yes, she is beautiful, and so is her sister.

I wish he'd come out of hiding!! I KNOW that he has lost of material ready to go, has been trying it out in the studio over a period of YEARS---what is he waiting for? I do not agree with the few who sday his voice is "shot". He's 61, of course he isn't going to hit those high notes that he did in his 20's & 30's! He has to know how badly hias legion of fans want more, so I hope he'll grace us with even just one more album. I admire him tremendously for his many talents, not just his voice, which is God-given; for his songwriting, as a producer, collaborator, and just an all around class act.

I've just posted that no one has ever said a word about Sham's mom! I will say that Sham will be 40 in August 2010, is married to a handsome guy and has 2 boys.
In pictures that have been widely posted on the net of the family at the San Diego zoo you can see Steve, Sham (but never from the front), and a female in a red jacket with glasses that I thought was a young girl---now I'm told that's Sham's mom! If so, she's very, very short!
I was sent a photo of Steve, during his short hair/suit & ties days (2000+ a few years?) of him and Robin, a model who was his girlfriend for 10 years! I'd never heard of her, and how did he keep that "secret" for so long? (Personally, I do not find her attractive at all!). She had a son named Royce, and he mentions them on one or more of his albums' liner notes. News to me!

I'll check the myspace thing, but I highly doubt it. There are several Steve Perrys on Facebook, 2 of them have asked to be my friend! I send a message saying that if they can tell me what their REAL last name, in Portugese, is, we'll talk---never heard from them again! He's always said that he never reads anything about himself, hasn't since the review of his first performance with Journey. I really don't believe he has nothing better to do than sit at the PC and see what people are saying!
But I am a friend of Gregg Rolie on Facebook; Neal Schon (one of several, you have to find the correct one) & Arnel Pineda are on there, too. I haven't looked for the others yet.
I have yet to find any way of contacting Steve Perry direectly. As of 2007 he had email, but ONLY his true and sworn to secrecy friends had it. There is no official website or fan club associated with him any more, but Laura & Cindy still have Fan Asylum up & running. He has posted 3 messages in the last 2 years: when news reached him of the hoax performance in Honolulu, because he did not want his fans getting scammed into buying plane tickets to Hawaii and said he already had his lawyers on finding the perpetrator; a long message when Michael Jackson died about what a thrill it was to work with him on "We Are The World"; and last January, acknowledging all the birthday wishes to him and saying that he was making a sizable donation to Oxfam, for relief to Haiti after the earthquake and if fans wished to in honor of his birthday they should do so to the charity of their choice. (And I think he may have lied about his age again, as he always has! He's 61).

I wonder if the woman with glasses and red jacket could be Sham's mother in law?? She looks mixed, and Sham looks very white. Also, there is a small kid behind the woman in the red jacket, and the little boy looks mixed as well, so I am thinking maybe the woman is the mother in law. I dont know if Sham is married to a black man or mixed guy, but the folks with Perry and Sham dont look Portuguese or white. they look like they may be african American or Hispanic. I cant picture that woman as Sham's mom. If ya zoom in on the pic at the zoo, you will see the lil boy.

I do not think the woman in the red jacket has anything to do w/Steve and Sham. She just so happens to be there and is turning and leaving.

Jan Odegaard says:
Yeah, this is odd...The first photo I saw, where the female in the red jacket is reading a map or brochure, looked like a young gitrl to me! I have been told by at least one person that she is NOT with Steve & group; however, someone who sent me additional photos from that day and knows quite a bit about Sham & her family (no, don't even ask---I will not share with anyone!) said that she was Sham's mother! I can't say, I've never heard or read a single word about Sham's mom. All I can say about the other photos of that day is that the woman is the red jacket is very, very short!

Jan Odegaard says:
Gosh, I'd have to dig through all my photos (hundreds!) to try & figure this out!! OK, I found a few: there IS a resemblance between Steve & Sham, not sure what it is exactly---neither of them is pale, plenty of freckles, similar nose. The photo I have of her boys: older one has straight brown hair; younger one has shorter hair with definitely some texture, & his skin tone is darker, & his eyes look very dark brown. Have seen her husband: very good looking, and I THINK (don't quote me on this, I don't have it at my fingertips) someone told me he is of "an island"-type descent---I don't dare say which, this person may not want it shared. As for the woman in the red jacket at the zoo: beats the heck out of me! She is wearing a ring on ring finger of left hand, maybe wedding band? When I first saw it she looked like a young girl to me, but now I see she is much older...
That's about all I can say right now!
I don't know what Portugese or "white" looks like! Having done genealogy for 25 years, every marriage in every generation adds a little something, so basically we're all mutts!

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 13, 2010 8:40:09 AM PDT
Jan Odegaard says:
Been awhile since I've been in here.
I'm told again & again that the woman in the red jacket is Sham's mom---I haven't "bought" it yet, need more concrete evidence. There is another photo of them leaning on a railing in a zoo (San Diego), looking down into a pit (like for gorillas, etc.) The woman in red jacket is there, too, and all I can say is that she is very very short!
Keep in touch!

Steve never went to school in NC.

He was born, raised and attended school in Northern California.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 25, 2010 9:09:45 PM PDT
Jan Odegaard says:
Correct, and incorrect. He was born after his parents & both sets of grandparents had come to the states from Portugal/Azores, settled in Hanford CA where he was born, raised, & went to school. He went to college for a time at Vasilia? CA but did not graduate; I think it was like a junior college and this may have been where he met his daughter's mother; I've not been able to find ANYTHING on her!!! A musician in LA who knew Journey told me the baby was the result of a short fling, no grand love affair; Steve would have been 20-21 yrs. old. The mom left (and NO, the she is NOT Sherrie!) and went back "home" to NC; Steve didn't know about his child for years and met her for the first time when she was 13!
He's lived in Lemoore, CA, before and after joining Journey, and with Sherrie there, I believe; they were together 5-6 years before they broke up 1985/86--a lifetime in a rock musicians' career! I'm guessing that as Journey began to make serious money he invested in land: had or still has multiple properties---DelMar, Calabasas, one near San Diego, one in the Frisco Bay area, one now (?) in New Mexico. It's been impossible (for me at least, over the past 2 years) to find out exactly where his primary "home" is! He was living in Delmar in 2007.
His connection to NC is through his daughter, "Sham/Shamela"---a shortened version of her very unusual first name; her last name (before or after marriage) is Brame/Braeme, & she graduated high school in or near Fayetteville NC. She'll be 40 this August; her husband apparently has business interests in both NC and southern CA, so Steve has spent time in NC with her & her family (she has a very handsome husband and 2 sons, age 10-13? or so by now; also a younger half sister, both she & Sham are beautiful.) Steve's brought them to CA many times, took her on tour once. He had, maybe still has, cousins in the Hanford & Lemoore areas, at least he did back when Journey finally had their first hits and hit the radio waves, & his mom was still alive.
I'm so thrilled that he, who after losing his grandparents & beloved Mom, Mary, has now had a family that he obviously enjoys very much. We know how intensely private he became a long time ago, and that seems to have become almost obsessive. If you see him out in public he's very gracious about allowing his picture to be taken (best to ask first, though). But when he's with his daughter & grandchildren he becomes Papa Bear: does NOT alow photos of them to be taken! A few have been, and I managed to print them off the internet before they were pulled off in a matter of a couple days! I can't find out where he is at present or what he's doing.
A Perry Pal on Facebook told me that on Twitter (never been there, have no plans to) she's seen people say that he's become VERY reclusive, rarely leaves the house; he's been seen in AA meetings AND coming out of L.A. bars at 8:30 a.m. I just told her that there have always been those who like to trash him: they say his voice is shot, etc. I pay no attention until I get something to confirm it.) He does seem to be much less "out & about" than he was in 2009 and I admit that I feel some concern about what might be going on with him. But I still love him him, admire him, and wish him nothing but happiness. I ignore the negative stuff---not because I've turned him into a diety, but I just don't buy it until I have proof. We can only wait & see, and wish him all the love & respect we can! Speaking for myself, same age as Steve, there are things we go through at this stage of life when we question things we've done, worries we may have that we never did before. I'm still on his side!
