Used to be of value but now just a "bait and switch"

Like I just mentioned to the Amazon CS rep, I've set up around 20 Subscribe & Save's over the last few years.

I'd say 13 of them have seen price rises of up to 30% if not 50% within the first 3 times of use..that's incredible!

It appears that the prevailing strategy is to low ball existing prices to such an extreme so as to get you enrolled and then pull the mat out from under you.

Why piss off good customers by doing this?

Aside from S&S, I spend a lot of money on Amazon.

But this "bait and switch" ideology is going to piss enough people off that they start losing core business..and that's when the message will be heard by the Amazon big wigs..only then

So, if you're experiencing the same thing as me, cancel the S&S even if the price is now somewhat similar to where you can get it offline..even with the inconvenience factor taken into consideration.

It's the only way they'll get the point...........................

I've had prices on some S&S items go up. I've also had prices on the SAME S&S items go down a few weeks later: noticeably. Last month I received a notice that the maple syrup I had on S&S was not available but that they would send me a comparable kind which they specified. I had a few days to let them know if I did not want that substitute. To me that's darned good customer service.

To just get peeved and cancel all of your S&S items because the price of one goes up is cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I have cancelled several items during the past 6 months because of this...

especially when they lowered the 15% discount to only 5%.. its not worth the wait for that tiny amount of savings.. and then i find many of the same products at lower at places on iherbdotcom and vitacostdotcom

S. Miller says:
i almost forgot..you can go to camelcamelcameldotcom and look for amazon prices on specific products over the past year. its great! they will send you alerts when your products go down .. but know that the price typically goes up right after that, it all depends.

I "copy" the name of the product on amazon then "paste" it into the search part of camelcamelcamel. that way you search the exact same product.

I too have been disappointed by the 5% Subscribe & Save discounts-- I wonder if they're losing money on this program?

Fact is, I have been disappointed by prices going up... EVERYWHERE! There are some items which I added to S&S simple BECAUSE they were at a crazy low sale price. The item was on sale (plus a coupon at times) and S&S was still a discount from that price. I know that the regular price is going to be higher, but unlike many other auto-shipping retailers, Amazon gives me a fairly good lead time before shipping the next order. I can choose to accept, delay or cancel it.

I do my research to ensure I am still getting the best possible price. and I am.

Prices do go up but they also go down, and with free shipping and the discount its still a great feature. Sorry, I totally disagree with you Jack Franks.

@L. G. Fontenot. You must not have been privy to a significant bait and switch then. I've experienced a few penny drops in prices... but I just experienced a 30% increase on a S&S item that I've been receiving each month for more than two years. (It's the Rice-A-Roni 4-cheese, btw.) Not a premium product at my local big box super-store; they carry ALL the flavors. Now that Amazon is no longer cheaper, I'll forgo the convenience and save the $5, without even using coupons.

And what is even more suspicious is that they notify me of price decreases, but not of this increase. I found out about it by accident. Perhaps I'll be notified within the next few days? I'm betting not, though.

@V. Wiedmann. I read the post differently. I don't think the OP is going to cancel ALL S&S subscriptions. Just warning everyone to pay attention and cancel if the price is seemingly unfair.

As long as the prices for my S&S products stay lower than what I can get them for through other outlets, to include the manufacturer's web shop, then I'm still satisfied. What ticks me off is when the products I get used to in S&S get taken off the S&S list of available products.

I have Had the same issue My Mom is disabled and it has been a helpful program for me to get her some of the things she needs, but you are right it seems that shortly after I get something that works for her and my budget, it ether goes up in price or they try and substitute something that is not even close to the same.

DAOWAce says:
I've looked through my S&S history a few times.

Every time I do I am depressed because nearly everything I ordered since then has had its price increased by 5-50%, one item even DOUBLED its price; some removed from S&S entirely.

It's for these reasons I've not purchased many of the things I used to consume (I mainly buy food/supplements from Amazon). It is a shame; more of a shame to know that anything I'm currently buying for the first time has been cheaper in the past, and even cheaper at local stores (though sometimes not around where I live).

I can only wonder what Amazon is going to do in future.

I cancelled 12 of my S&S subscriptions due to price increases.

Electra says:
I have had S&S items change in price over time, but each time it's happened I've gotten an alert that says "shipping soon at a new price" whether or not it was an increase or decrease. Sometimes if the increase is too great, I cancel the order, but I don't feel that's a bait and switch. Sometimes things go off sale, sometimes things get more expensive. It's not like there's a penalty for canceling, even after just one order. I'm not as happy with the program now as I was before things came once a month instead of starting as soon as you order them, but I can live with it.
