Hi Jay! Nice thread!

My top 5 funny tv characters

1. Chandler (Friends)

2. Lucy Ricardo (I Love Lucy)

3. Valeri Cherish (The Comeback)

4. Ehtel Mertz (I Love Lucy)

5. Dr Dick Solomon (3rd Rock)

I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to Jane Curtin who is wonderful in all her tv roles from SNL to Kate and Allie to 3rd rock from the sun. Love her

I'd have to think on this one a bit but let me give at least an honorable mention to Andy on According to Jim.

Often times I get stuck in "current" mode & wouldn't think of guys like Jack Tripper which is a "crime".

On that note I used to love Balki Bartocamus(SP?) on Perfect Strangers & if "cartoon characters count Baby Sinclair from Dinosaurs is one I quote a fair amount.

If I add Tim Allen from Tool Time that wouldn't even be a bad top 5.

Jay,

Great tandems really feed off each other.

Sometimes I don't know who was funnier between Tim & Al during thier scenes together on Tool Time. Al's humor was often a more subtle wink/nod. Tim def. got more interactions with family etc since it was "his" show.

Jim Belushi & Andy are also a great tendem on According to Jim. I picked Andy but I could've basically just as easily picked Jim.

Pretty much the whole cast on Friends did a great job but now I'm bordering on another topic.

Wow. There are so many great funny characters! Let's see if I can wheedle it down to five...

1) Flo "Kiss my grits" from Alice
2) Sue Ann Nivens from Mary Tyler Moore Show
3) Ted Baxter from Mary Tyler Moore Show
4) Cliff Huxtable from The Cosby Show
5) a tie: Griffen Vessey and Pauline Fox both from Cosby (the OTHER Cosby show)

That was pretty quick. I could probably sit here for an hour and have a pretty impressive list!

The three that immediately come to mind:

Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor)
George Costanza (Jason Alexander)
Sgt. Vince Carter (Frank Sutton)

(1) Ruth Dunbar from Bosom Buddies **
(2) Evelyn Harper from Two and a Half Men **
(3) Edith Bunker was the perfect partner for Archie
(4) Schneider from One Day At A Time
(5) Hayden Fox, Luther Van Dam and Dauber Dybinski... the comedic triumvirate from Coach

** both were played by Holland Taylor and as I recall they were very similar characters

J. Coco says:
She's not the absolute funniest TV character, but I find Katy Mixon's always high Victoria Flynn on "Mike And Molly" quite funny. She's able to play really dumb without her character just being really dumb, due to the character's always drug induced state.

Lynda says:
I have not watched this show because of programming conflicts. I like the actors who play both title characters. I hope to see it one of these days.

Lynda says:
(1) Hardison from Leverage ~ not really a comedy but he sure is funny
(2) Randy Disher from Monk ~ again, not a comedy per se
(3) Randy Hicky from My Name is Earl
(4) Frank and Marie Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond
(5) Burt Campbell from Soap

I will 2nd that nomination for Randy Hickey from my name is Earl. Love that show esp. the episodes where the Karma thing works its way out in an unsuspected way like when he restores that one guys faith in humanity by "running toward the bomb" that ends up neing a rocket ship.

L. Grueb,

I watched the entire season of Mike & Molly on my DVR June - July. I wasn't previously familiar with Melissa McCarthy, but as I was watching the episodes I felt that she deserved to be nominated for an emmy for her role and was very glad that she was.

J. Coco says:
I've never seen Leverage, but I absolutely agree with all the others. Burt Campbell was an hysterical character on Soap. In fact, My Name Is Earl, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Soap all had very funny and talented casts.
