Well, I thought it was high-time to have a up-dated discussion on TV theme songs and music---past & present.
From the past, one of my favorites is Believe or Not from tv series, Greatest American Hero; is one of those songs you can hum or sing along with.
And now with the new Hawaii Five-O series coming up, I am hoping they with re-release the original Five-O TV-Series SoundTrack, do that along with the new series soundtrack. I've been looking for this on CD for the longest time. Hope the wait is almost over.

Love Hawaii Five O. I have the original series on dvd up to the most recent release season 9. Quite probably the most popular theme ever. But there are so many more I like too . How bout The Rockford Files! And I am partial to Mod Squad, my favorite show. What a neat theme!

I used to have that 45 single of The Greatest American Hero! I Loved it too!

Yes, one of the best.
And right next to it, I'll place Monk's theme song. But at the moment,
cannot recall the title; but a good song to hum or sing to.

Patricia,

I also like and agree with you about Monk's theme song, "It's A Jungle Out There" by Randy Newman.

Was this song put out as a single?
I don't think they ever did place it on the TV-Soundtrack.

J. Coco says:
Patricia,

I don't think that "It's A Jungle Out There" was released as a single, and it's not on the Monk soundtrack as that only included music from the first season and "It's A Jungle Out There" became the theme song as of the second season. I also don't see it on any Randy Newman albums.

USA Network should put out a cd of theme songs. I also like the Psych theme song "I Know You Know" by The Friendly Indians.

Gee, too bad. Would be great if they'd up-grade the Monk TV-Soundtrack. The series had 2 themes, musically; they should had used both in the Soundtrack. Afterall, fair is fair.

I completely agree.

MAD MEN is still one of the best in my book:

MEDIUM with it's Hitchcockian-like theme was a surprise and a delight:

PUSHING DAISIES welcomes you to it's strange and wonderful world with a Burtonesque theme:

MONK (original theme) with it's "Gypsy Jazz" guitar work thrilled me:

I don't know why they slightly changed the theme from "The Mentalist" from season one to season two. I wonder how it will be this season.

I like the shorter version I posted best, which one is that? They should stick with it.

What the Hell were they thinking?

I don't know why they replaced Monk's theme with an ordinary song by Randy Newman but in my opinion, as well as many others, they screwed the pooch. The original theme with it's "Gypsy Jazz" guitar work was unique in American television, as was Monk.....and it fit like a glove. If I remember correctly, their was quite an uproar over it but the producers refused the fan's wishes. Apparently mea culpa is just a bit below their station.

I think it's clear that if Hollywood is given a choice between quality or the mundane, they're choose mundane every time.
Not that Randy isn't still capable of writing a cute little diddy from time-to-time, but "Good Old Boys" (1974) was his last truly unique album.

The bottom line is this: When lightning strikes, you just thank the gods or your muse and leave well enough alone. "It's a Jungle Out There" is just another Pop song among millions.

stevign,

The one that you posted is very short but I think that's the one that was used in season two.

J. Coco says:
stevign,

I respectfully disagree. I think "It's A Jungle Out There" fits very well, as the lyrics mirror Monk's personality and issues, and I feel that the clips that are shown during the opening also go well with the song.

I especially like the theme from "30 Rock", which captures the mood of that show, and although it wasn't written for the show, the song chosen as the theme for "Chuck", Cake's "Short Skirt, Long Jacket", is a good fit as well.

re: " "It's A Jungle Out There" fits very well,"

It would have made a good "2nd choice" and despite the fact that it may fit, there's nothing unique about it whatsoever; it's still just another Pop song among millions. Besides, the fans already LOVED the 1st one, so why fool around with success? Maybe they just wanted to piss off at least 1/2 there fans.......well, it worked.

Most shows play a song at the end of the show but no one.....and I mean NO ONE, picks better and more appropriate end-songs like MAD MEN. Just thought I'd throw that in.............

I always did like the X-Files theme.
Very catchy.

The one I like the best is the theme song from COACH. I guess yall already knew that though.
Being,---in my mind that is the very best show to ever grace the airwaves.
