I need a good PS3 RPG to dig into. I want something that plays alot like dragon quest. I know I'll get some good advice here, let me know whats up guys.

Tales of Graces F 80hrs in and i keep coming back for more. probably the closest you'll come to a dragon quest game on ps3

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 29, 2012 2:13:41 AM PDT
Not even close. Tales of Graces is an ARPG, Dragon Quest is the very picture of old-school turn-based combat. Ni no Kuni would be closer.

Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 maybe? But my favorite part about Dragon Quest is their class system. For that, I enjoy Class of Heroes for PSP. It comes with 10 different races, 15 different classes, and M/F gender. Oh, I forgot to add there are 3 alignments as well.

Meh. I can suggest a lot of RPG games, but none that really play like DQ.

Eternal Sonata? =(

He asked for ps3 and in the tittle he says "NOW" Ni no Kuni is not out "NOW" so again the closest rpg to dragon quest out "NOW" is Tales of Graces F. Eternal Sonata probably a good second.

If we're talking psn then there are many more. When he mentioned dragon quest first thing that came to mind was the last one on ps2.

Atelier Rorona/Totori/Meruru, and Hyperdimension Neptunia. oldschool style turn-based RPGs, but your mileage may vary.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 29, 2012 4:26:59 AM PDT
No, it's not. There are turn-based RPGs on the PS3--I couldn't name them offhand because I don't own a PS3, mind you--, and Tales of Graces is nothing like Dragon Quest.

Don't know a thing about Dragon Quest, but a good turn-based mix-of-RPG-types is Valkyria Chronicles.

It's about 30-40 hours long first time through, has game+, a lot of cutscenes and dialogue, and gets pretty challenging about 2/3 of the way through the game, especially if you not all too creative about strategizing.

Look, I'm not even saying Tales games are bad--not that I've seriously said that here in ages, if ever. But Tales games are nothing like Dragon Quest games. The pacing, the way the story is relayed, the length, the gameplay... everything is different.

Is CoH any good?

I thought about picking it up since I just bought a good chunk of Atlus' album of PSP games.

I did buy Legends of Grimrock though, so that might give me my first person RPG fix for awhile when it launches.

What about Yggdra Union?

I now have:
Crimson Gem Saga
Hexyz Force
P3P
Knights in the Nightmare

I was looking at Yggdra Union or Class of Heroes. I think CoH would be a nice change of pace to standard turn based RPGs.

The closest think your Best Buy would have is a fake case offering Ni No Kuni as a preorder. The game isn't even out in the states so unless you live in Japan or your Best Buy stocks import games than it's not the US release of the game.

Tales of Graces f isn't similar to Dragon Quest that much but I would still highly recommend the game. I am 35 hours into the game and loving it. The game adds a ton of replay value if you are interested in collecting everything in RPG's as well.

I just bought CoH about an hour or two ago. I haven't had a chance to get into it yet--only got as far as making my first character before dinner came calling. I'll let you know what I think when I get further. It sounds pretty good, if hard, at least according to the Desctructoid, RPGamer, and Classic Game Room reviews.

EDIT (in response to your edit)
CoH is very much a turn-based RPG, it's just a first-person dungeon crawler. I've never played it, but Yggdra Union seems like one of those games that fans absolutely love, and everybody else either can't really get interested or dislikes.

I think I'll probably stick with that I have then and just play LoG when it releases in April.

I've got more than enough JRPG goodness to tide me over through 2012 now.

FFIV
FFVI
FFIX

and the listed games above

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 29, 2012 6:35:15 AM PDT
Pfft, I bought FFV, VI, VII, IX, Vanguard Bandits, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Eternal Sonata, and Class of Heroes in the last week alone.

Posted on Mar 29, 2012 6:45:44 AM PDT
I already owned the rest of the FF games ;)

And I purchased the rest of those on Monday and Tuesday of this week, haha.

Sony sales! *shakes fist*

StriderNeo15 says:
Well he didn't say the turn based battle system is what he is looking for.

They are long anime-inspired JRPGs, if he hates action based battle systems then sure, he should skip Graces.

If he is looking for a long, fun JRPG, then Graces is probably his best bet until Ni No Kuni is released.

Ni No Kuni isn't turn-based either.

I would suggest Disgaea 4 if you enjoy Strategy RPGs. Endless content, amazing battle system and hilarious dialogue.

StriderNeo15 says:
Correct, I mean, IS there even a traditional turn based RPG on the PS3?

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 29, 2012 6:50:38 AM PDT
He said he wanted something like Dragon Quest. Graces is nothing like Dragon Quest.

@Benpachi
It doesn't look like it at first, though from what I've seen reading the moonspeakier parts of the internet, it uses a fundamentally turn-based system.
