Microsoft (MSFT) will launch its next-generation Xbox video game and home entertainment console ahead of the holidays this year, and the device will have big shoes to fill. Further solidifying its position among the best-selling consoles of all time, Microsoft's director of programming for Xbox Live Larry Hryb announced on Twitter Monday evening that cumulative Xbox 360 console sales have surpassed 76 million units. Hryb also said Kinect sales have topped 24 million units and Xbox Live now hosts 46 million paying subscribers. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is currently the fourth best-selling home video game console of all time behind Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii at No.3, and Sony's (SNE) PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles at No.2 and No.1, respectively.

How do you pronounce Hryb?

JWK says:
Or NTDOY.

It sounds like they're making fun of Nintendo. "Hey man, you played that new Super Mario game? It's so dumb it's like 'Ninten-DOY!!!'" "Ohhhhhhh! Sick burn!," his fratboy friends would say.

"and Xbox Live now hosts 46 million paying subscribers."

Wait, seriously?

It's a shame it's selling less software now than it did when it only had ~50 Million units at the end of 2010.

Ms never gives out gold numbers, that 46 million is gold and silver combined.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 12, 2013 10:44:54 AM PST
They absolutely give out those numbers. Haven't you ever read their quarterly reports or press releases?

No, that is paying customers.

It was confirmed by the ex-CBS honcho that is now the president of Entertainment & Digital Media segment.

They are viewing this ~50m userbase as one similar to that of a Cable company and are working on exclusive interactive content for the service.

Lol, I guess not. The last gold numbers I saw that were only gold were 2010 and the number was twelve million gold subscribers or something. If they've got 46 million gold subs then that's pretty impressive.

So, PS3's have sold 77 mil? Dang.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 12, 2013 10:59:08 AM PST
So the world really has at least 46 million suckers.

Fascinating

So just having a paid Gold subscription makes me a sucker?

I have a Plus subscription as well. Does that cancel out the sucker status or am I only half of a sucker?

I. Flores says:
Maybe not a sucker, but just a tad gullible.

I think you're a double sucker actually.

If you pay for anything, ever, that I wouldn't, you're just an ass.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 12, 2013 11:17:29 AM PST
How so? I mean, I save between $200 and $300 per year on games bought from XBL sales. My Gold subscription for the next year cost me $12. I will literally be saving about twenty times the cost of the subscription.

But...you pay for McDonald's food!

Thats not important. People that don't think like me are wrong and people that spend money I don't have on things I don't know that I want are immoral and unethical.

Paying $100 a month for a smartphone that is "smart" but paying $4 to $5 a month for Live that is just insane.

Don't people pay more a month for that additional cable box they seldomnly use?

I gave up a $120yr plus taxes HD Box rental in favor of $35/yr Gold. Profit.

Show me a link that touts the number of gold subs. Every earnings report I've seen doesn't give a number, just vague talk of growth...ect. This is the only link I've found aNd its a couple years old. The total number of subscribers is 35 million and The marketing manager wouldn't differentiate between gold and free.

Here's the only gold numbers I've ever seen. It touts that half of Xbox lives then 25 million users were gold the number he gives is 12 million. Based on this, live's gold user base would be sitting around 25 million.
