SNES was my first console, so it holds a special place in my heart.

The importance of the Sonic and Knuckles cart? I fail to see such importance in that game. I had it in the day even. Was the importance the fact that even back in the day developers couldn't keep their promises and didn't finish games on time?

Have to go with SNES. It had three of my favorite games of all time, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and Final Fantasy VI.

They couldn't meet the deadline when they released Sonic 3.

Sonic and Knuckles paved the way for DLC, with the fact that you could put Sonic 2 or 3 into the top of the Sonic and Knuckles cart, which in turn would allow extra content for those games.

It was the first instance (to my knowledge) where a player could take an older game that he/she already owns and play it with a different character from a newer game. It was an extremely early example of DLC.

The Genesis version of Star Control is so bad but I still love it. It's so SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. The 3DO is worth it for the sequel though.

Uh... didn't BBS boards online exist prior to that?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 5:35:39 PM PST
That's what I basically just said.

Well, perhaps but the Genesis didn't connect to those. I get where you're going and I should have specified "console games" but I think you knew that.

I said it better. Now go bring us some cheeseburgers.

I still don't buy it. I think Sonic and Knuckles was a poor game and calling it DLC is silly. Couldn't the same thing be said about Game Genie then? Or Pro Action Replay?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 5:45:47 PM PST
No, Game Genie & Pro Action Replay enabled you to patch existing code already in the cartridge. It didn't introduce anything new into the game.

Whether Sonic & Knuckles was a poor game is not really relevant. It enabled the user to introduce a new playable character into the Sonic 3 cartridge.

AND Sonic 2

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 5:54:22 PM PST
You're right. For some reason I was never fond of Knuckles and only used him a little bit in Sonic 3. I keep forgetting that S&K worked for Sonic 2.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 5:55:52 PM PST
I prefer him to Shadow.

Still, I don't think Sonic and Knuckles deserves the credit. It was a unique cartridge at the time, for sure, but it didn't really change anything in that generation or the generation afterward. The first system I can remember actually having that kind of DLC after Sonic and Knuckles is Dreamcast but I doubt they would've credited that influence to S&K.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 6:00:04 PM PST
That's fine if you don't want to give S&K the credit but I can't think of any earlier instance (on consoles) where you could download a character from one cartridge and play with him in another.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 6:05:17 PM PST
You're missing my point here. You guys said "the importance" of the game. If it were important, there would've been something that had been influenced by it. There weren't any games that seemed to be influenced by it though. How is it still important?
