So I'm surprising my wife with an iPad for our anniversary. It will be something we both use. Are iPad 2's still any good, or should I go with the newest model?

I have an ipad 2 and haven't had any issues. Although I didn't research too much into it (it was given to me otherwise I wouldn't have one :P).

Go with newest, the resolution of the screen is worth it.

Agree with Mogwai. Only hang up is if you have any older iStuff that won't accept the new Lightning cable.

I just got my wife an iPad 2 last month. Fully captures the iPad experience for $360 ish

Do you have a lot of iDevices and thus chargers around? If so, go with the iPad 3 because the newest one has the lightning charger and wouldn't be compatible with any of your old ones. If not, get the newest one.

We have a couple of iPod Touches, but I'm the only one who uses it (and even then only for podcasts).

My buddy got his wife a 16GB iPad 3 with the retina display for Verizon right here. Amazon warehouse deal i believe was about 460 at the time. He said she loves it and it looks brand new so big savings on Amazon if they still have them im sure would be the same for any of the older models too.

Also, we LOVE our iPad. I think it's a great call because you will find yourselves using it all the time.

I've heard of this "Retina display" stuff. Does it really make a big difference?

Only thing I'm debating now is a 16GB or 32GB. We will definitely be playing some games on it.

We have a 32GB, which we might have filled up with TV shows and movies but we also have AppleTV so we just stream that stuff off my PC.

Yes. I have an iPad 1 and every time I see new one the screen looks so much better. But what she doesn't know can't hurt.

Having not kept up with this stuff, I thought the iPad 2 was last year, and the newest one is just using the "iPad" name.

So the iPad 2 16GB is $399 and the 16GB iPad Retina Display is $499. Seems like a fine price to pay for better resolution.

Do you guys have the WiFi one? I'm going with that.

Pick 34 says:
Yup I only have the wifi one, 16 gig I believe.

Yes, the pixel desity improvement is substantial... just not enough for me to warrant the difference as we don't use anything that really would make use of the higher resolution.

I don't use it to take photos with its awkward, crappy camera...and most of the post editing of photos we do is done on the PC on the big screen.

Go play with them at Best Buy, is the best advice i can give you. If the price between them on a promo is insignificant, go for the newest.

I can tell you in the dark the iPad 2's screen is bright enough to make your eyes bleed. The main uses for us is web, social apps, youtube and kids/casual games. Works perfect for those and everything looks great at 720p on that sub 10" frame.

The first time they sold it as just iPad was last MAR. The newest one they took the one from MAR and put the newer processor, better camera, and new Lightning cable in and also sell it as just iPad. Both have Retina Display. I went with wi-fi only.

Yeah, it's just so much more expensive for the 3/4G one, and we so far haven't even once needed it.

I just use my phone's hot spot when I want it to use data on the go.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 27, 2012 9:34:57 AM PST
Yeah, we wouldn't be using it for photos or anything (we have a real camera!).

Is there a way to dim the screen? My iPod Touch dims well enough...my Android phone, on the other hand, does not.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 27, 2012 9:35:53 AM PST
We'd be using it at home. If we're every anywhere we need to use the internet we have our phones.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 27, 2012 9:36:55 AM PST
Well you don't go Apple to save money.

Yep, you can dim it. Just pointing out its pretty bright and legibility is not an issue for us for reading text and what not. Seeing it in store though is your best bet as that may vary.
