as you may know, the wii u can use external harddrives for storage, but does anyone know of a reliable drive of decent size that won't break your wallet?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 13, 2012 3:21:37 AM PST
What is the breaking point for your wallet? If you're going with a 3 TB drive then you're looking at $125-$150. Maybe cheaper on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

At the moment, all I can tell you is that the Wii U will only recognize hard drives that are 2 TB or less. Anything with a higher capacity will not be compatible. That should help narrow down your price range.

External hard drives? Is this what next-gen looks like?

DVvM says:
"Anything you can plug into a USB port" is actually a significantly more generous HDD policy than either MS or Sony have given us this gen.

I mean, a $5 enclosure lets you use any HDD you can use in the PS3 in the Wii-U, but you're not even limited to 2.5" drives.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 17, 2012 6:06:54 PM PST
StriderNeo15 says:
How exactly is it generous? it's an additional cost.

You get 250GB+ from Sony and MS at no extra charge.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 17, 2012 6:24:25 PM PST
DVvM says:
But if you want more HDD than you have, you have to use a 2.5" SATA with the PS3 or a proprietary drive with the 360. With the Wii-U, you can use any HDD you can plug into a USB port.

StriderNeo15 says:
Right, but with 29GB at best you're most likely going to have to buy one regardless, after 4 years I am not even close to filling up 250GB with either my Xbox or PS3.

It's a nice feature, but it's far from generous.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 17, 2012 6:31:44 PM PST
DVvM says:
Well, MS and Sony (at least in Europe) are selling consoles without HDDs for a smaller fee. Compare the Wii-U to those, not to the SKUs with big hard drives.

Heck even 1TB would be more than enough for the Nintendo Wii U,I mean unless you're going to do massive downloads and the like. I would like to know from some people here though if they got their Wii U if it's worth getting right now or better to wait until 2013 at the latest.

Wait I need clarification:

Can the HDD have Wii U games installed on it or not? SD and flash were pretty much a no, internal memory allows it, but I'm not sure about HDD.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 17, 2012 6:34:35 PM PST
DVvM says:
I believe the HDD can have games installed on it.

What people interpreted as "you can't install games on the HDD" was the statement that you can't use USB flash drives to install games on. That implies that you can install games on the HDD.

Aku says:
Cool beans, then. I won't even bother trying to max out the HDD size because I'm not expecting much immediate greatness from a Nintendo online shop, but it's nice to have the option.

why would he compare the wii u that's being sold in the US to ones being sold by its competitors in europe? completely different markets.

Flores. says:
I would hardly call having an ugly black box connected to my supposedly cutting edge, streamlined, brand new console a "generous policy"

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 17, 2012 7:16:26 PM PST
Cutting edge...lol.

I will need a big black box that is plugged into my power outlet and WiiU USB in addition to my Ethernet adapter?

Flores. says:
Cutting edge for Nintendo consoles, of course.

Modern Bear says:
Since it means keeping the cost down on the console it's a good idea for Nintendo to handle the hard drive situation this way. Nintendo will sell more consoles because the price was kept reasonable, which means they have more earning potential from licensing and game sales. People who want a hard drive can then buy their own to suit their needs, ones that will be the size they want and also be a lot cheaper than what Microsoft charges for their propriety ones. This is only a problem for people who do nothing but complain about irrelevant stuff or just hate Nintendo.
