OT: Remember when boxes of cereal came with cool toys?

Last night when we went grocery shopping I was looking at what kind of stuff cereal came with these days. Most of them didn't and the ones that did were lame. Things like a discount on movie tickets, how to turn the cereal box into a school folder or a flower station for bees, an ad for the cereal company's website, etc. The only cereal that came with anything was Cocoa Puffs with a twisty straw but you didn't even get a whole straw, it came in pieces and you had to collect them all.

The era of watching Saturday morning cartoons and fishing for toys out of the cereal box has died long ago.

I remember when Cracker Jack boxes came with something other than stickers.

Fruity Yummy Mummy.

It was a rebranding of the short lived werewolf themed fruit cereal "Fruit Brute" which appears in the background of many Quentin Tarrantino movies.

Yeah I had some a couple of weeks ago and it was a weird paper thing where you made Abe Lincoln's face appear.

Ever try it?

Mom: eat all the cereal and then you can get the toy.

Did they have to stop doing that because it was addicting kids to sugar?

I remember when Chex came with a PC game that was basically a reskinned Duke 3D, that was awesome.

Fruity Yummy Mummy? Once, it wasn't very good. Fruit Brute was before my time though.

I dunno, when I was I a kid, I remember getting toys in the box but I also remember the majority of them being really lame back then too. We're old now and not the market for the cereal prizes.

The three monster branded cereals form the 70's I was familiar with were:
Franken Berry
Count Chocula
Boo Berry (which was awful, tasted like coloring)

Maybe, but I think sugar is addicting kids to sugar.

I thought it used levels from Doom.

I remember Franken Berry and Count Chocula.

I think I was one of the rare kids who actually liked Golden Grahams.

There are still some cool toys to be found in cereal boxes.

I'd have killed for that as a kid.

I'm not gonna lie, that is pretty cool but it seems that is more the exception rather than the rule these days.

It seriously came with parts of a straw? What a crappy prize! I remember when I could get the entire straw in the box and have it cost me two bits.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 28, 2012 11:24:18 AM PST
I would have broken that thing so fast as a kid, seeing how it worked and testing it's durability.
