"This isn't just a list of awesome video games from 2012 (that much shorter list comes later). There will be some not-so-great games listed here as well. There will be some games that didn't release in 2012, but still made a mark on the year regardless. There will even be some games that will never release.

What all of these games have in common is that they're representative of a trend or interesting story that captured the zeitgeist of 2012 -- they all say something about what happened this year"

Nice to see FTL on that list though I am surprised that Hotline Miami wasn't mentioned. That game seems to have made a bigger splash.

Final Fantasy X-2 didn't come out in 2012. And CoD: Black Ops Declassified?????????

I.Flores says:
I've haven't even heard of half the games on that list.

Not all games are on Sony platforms. That is probably why you haven't heard of them.

I.Flores says:
Maybe CoD:Declassified shaped up 2012 as in what NOT to do with such an established franchise.

DVvM says:
I made a typographical error, it was supposed to be Final Fantasy XIII-2, which did come out in North America in 2012. It has since been corrected.

This is also not a list of "good games" ("Haunts" and "Project Copernicus" certainly don't qualify for that.) Here's what they said about Blops Declassified:

"There's a dark irony that the developer of this game is called "Nihilistic." Black Ops Declassified may, in fact, be a significant step on the road to oblivion for its target platform -- the PlayStation Vita. Qualitatively, it's a complete disaster, earning a 31 Metacritic as of this writing. Reports suggest this isn't Nihilistic's fault -- the game started development at another studio, and was rushed to market for the holiday season as a key part of the marketing strategy for the struggling platform.

Indeed, it may end up being the turning point for the system. When Western publishers see that a Call of Duty game can't perform on Vita -- and those with knowledge say it isn't selling -- the lesson learned will likely be "don't bother." If the Vita's pitch is that it's current-gen console games in your pocket, and Call of Duty epitomizes the current generation, then this game is an unmitigated failure."

Kirksplosion says:
It says at the top that they didn't necessarily have to come out this year, and that the list will have bad games. Just a list that defined 2012, not the best of.

This kind of list would be much more difficult for me to compose than a simple GOTY list.

I.Flores says:
Regardless.

GarionOrb says:
Ugh...dude. Call of Duty didn't perform on the Vita because the GAME is bad, not because the Vita is bad.

DVvM says:
Well, what Blops Vita does show is that if you half-ass a game for the Vita, even if that game is part of a hugely popular brand, it won't sell.

If the Vita install base continues to be anemic, what incentive is there for third party devs to make anything more than half-assed Vita games?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 20, 2012 12:02:54 PM PST
Kirksplosion says:
I'm not sure they're saying that. I think the suggestion is - "If Call of Duty can't sell this system...what possibly can?"

That doesn't make any sense Re: CoD Vita

papa & yo was brilliant.

I don't care if I was the only one to play it, it doesn't make it not a great gaming experience.

I.Flores says:
If you half-ass a game for ANY platform, it won't sell well.

All sorts of half-assed Wii games sold really well. (Ninjabread Man anybody?)

The World Ends With You, Flores. It's your choice. Always has been.

I blame that on brand new gamers not knowing any better.

Kirksplosion says:
That's just fakedonnie. Nothing to see here.

For what it's worth, I quite enjoyed Papo & Yo, too. I understand the middling review scores, but the game excelled in what it was attempting, IMO.

I grew up with an alcoholic father, so the game...especially the ending...really hit home with me.

I.Flores says:
Define "really well"
Most Wii shovelware crap doesn't even break 100k, which on a userbase 100 million strong, is just a drop in the bucket.

Kirksplosion says:
I remember we had talked about that some around the release. I went into it with a very different perspective, but still found myself very moved by it. I can only imagine if those moments/images were relatable how affecting it could be.

DEEZUS says:
Oh, I cried my face off during the ending. <not ashamed>
