I ask this in light of the recent terrible ratings for Operation: Raccoon City and Ninja Gaiden 3.

Both of those games were pretty hyped, and turned out to be duds.

What titles have you bought into the hype for, then were disappointed when they turned out to be crap?

Well, I'm definitely in the minority here, but I got suckered into buying Super Mario Galaxy based on hype, and I personally thought it sucked.

I thought Gears 1 and 2 were the most overrated games I'd ever played. GTA IV and Modern Warfare 2 came close as well.

I bought into the hype behind Brute Force and bought it on release day. It wasn't the worst game I've played, but it wasn't very good.

Agreed. I thought it was scientifically impossible to dislike the mario galaxy games.

It's intriguing, for sure. I guess if someone has disliked every 3D Mario, I can see where they're coming from. I still wouldn't understand it, but at least I can make some sense of it. But if someone enjoys the 3D Marios, but not Galaxy...yeah, that does not compute with me in the least. The level design alone is exponentially better than prior games.

Mass Effect 2. Avoided it at first due to reports of diminished RPG elements. Finally gave in and purchased it due to all the glowing reviews on Amazon but... no.

King of Fighters XII. Although there was not much hype for it....***sigh*** I hyped it up in my mind all on my own. Worst iteration of the KOF series.

According to a bunch of strangers on the internet. I'll be my own judge, thank you.

A praised game that I ended up HATING was Bayonetta. What a load of pretentious & hollow garbage that was.

GarionOrb says:
I thought Bayonetta was one of the absolute greatest games this gen.

No Garion, no, no, no. Please say it isn't so! lol

Well to answer the OP, I never really buy into hype. I do my do diligence on the games I'm interested in. I watch all the trailers and gameplay videos I can get my hands on, and just go from there.

"The entire Uncharted series"

And one of your reasons for this is based on an entirely hypocritical critique.

uncledonnie3 says:
I totally get people not liking Bayonetta for various reasons but pretentious and hollow would be 2 adjectives where I can't even begin to fathom how they would be applied to that game.

I don't like Uncharted. Get over it already.
