Before PlayStation 4's official reveal, rumors were swirling that the console would come packing some sort of used games block, disabling a gamer's ability to play pre-owned or shared titles. But Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's head of its first-party Worldwide Studios, has confirmed to Eurogamer that that's simply not the case.

In a rather strange conversation between Eurogamer's writer and Yoshida, a back and forth ended up resulting in the following declaration from the Sony executive: "So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?" The answer came following an exchange between Yoshida and a Sony Japan PR representative, apparently seeking clarification about the particular question being asked.

We've reached out to Sony for official clarification, but considering that this comes from a well-established Sony executive in the know, it's safe to assume that PlayStation 4 will indeed be able to play used games. Crisis averted?

Microsoft in their next interview "We were just kidding about the whole no used games things ...haha"

Good for Sony. I don't think the console manufacturers should be fighting the anti used games crusade on behalf of the publishers. The idea that used games are hurting the industry is exaggerated at best or flat out false at worst.

Yeah that's great Sony, but is it too much to ask for some actual backwards compatibility for PS3 games? No not downloaded titles from PSN but the discs themselves.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 20, 2013 10:02:20 PM PST
They never said it WOULDN'T have physical backwards compatibility...hell they didn't even mention what form of media it would use until hours later.

Jonathan says:
At one point they said that the backwards compatibility was not "native" to the console. It was a quickly slipped in at the beginning of a sentence - like, yawn-and-you-would-miss-it kind of quick. They then started talking about how you could download all the old classics, so I took that to mean that the discs themselves wouldn't work.

Frank says:
I'm not paying extra for backward compatibility. That's what I have a PS3 for.

So it will not block used games (however, it will be download only hehe)

This is better news than anything we learned at the reveal. Bravo.

Sucks about no BC though. I sense another gen of double dipping.

We all saw no BC when the rumors started surfacing that they abandoned the cell. Just don't get rid of your current PS3, problem solved.

Yeah, unlike the other consoles, being a BD player makes it easy to keep the PS3 around plugged in somewhere.

I figure it will be an excuse to upgrade the TV. Buy a nice big set and move the old tv and console into another room. That way I could watch netflix or something while on the treadmill.

Lucanus says:
There still could be an activation fee for used games to play. I don't think it will launch with such a thing, but I do believe after the ps4 gets a base the fee will be implemented. Just like online passes with the pa3. Baby steps to banning used games is more logical than a day 1 ban.

Sony would have been really, really stupid to block used games.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 21, 2013 5:13:40 AM PST
Yeah, then they'd be pulling a Microsoft! Well, according to rumors...

WeaKeN says:
microsoft better rethink their stance if they are going to be blocking used games. that's a pretty huge issue for console gamers.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 21, 2013 5:20:11 AM PST
Their stance? Have they said anything at all on the matter?

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 21, 2013 5:37:02 AM PST
Nope.

you may have missed this part... "if they are going to be blocking used games"

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 21, 2013 5:38:58 AM PST
What? Every system uses online passes - PC has activation codes; so that's worse.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 21, 2013 5:44:05 AM PST
I have no idea why. I think console developers shot themselves in the foot on making it possible in the first place.

WeaKeN says:
it is one advantage consoles have over pc gaming. it's pretty nice to resell/lend games to your friends.

As much as I love PC gaming - you are right; about the resell part. I never let people touch my games.

Yep. Provided i buy a ps4 (which I probably will at some point), I'm glad I'll have another 5 years at least of swapping games with my friends.

You mean PS4 :)
