I'd say that flavor fell over into Lost Odyssey though.

Hinorobu Sakaguchi, and he would totally count. The Final Fantasies where he acted as writer and director have a very distinct feel from the rest of the series.

darn... then I honestly don't know any Auteur's by name. I never pay attention to that stuff with games :p I'll go with the guy who originally made Final Fantasy then... name is something I don't remember.

He doesn't really fit into auteur theory, but he is a wonderful composer none the less.

If it counts, Nobuo Uematsu

Definitely Tim Schaefer. I'd have wantedto say Gabe Newell, but I don't think he's as creatively involved with his games anymore.

Classic dropping some knowledge.

It was actually a Frenchie who developed auteur theory as it applies to film. Films are necessarily collaborative and often basically industrial efforts, but the idea of the auteur is that there are some directors who are so visionary that they function more like a single author (thus the role of the screenwriter in particular and everyone else in general is less important).

Anyway, for me personally, when it comes to film, I'd definitely put Hitchcock and Miyazaki into this category. In terms of video games, I haven't really thought about it that way before, but I guess Miyamoto would qualify for me personally, if by "auteur" we mean a game director whose vision comes through strongly in his work (i.e. I could identify one of his games as his work even if I didn't previously know it was his). Maybe Akihiro Hino and Shu Takumi too, just based on their more recent stuff.

The answer is Stephen Spielberg, at least according to Oskar.

For really though, Sakaguchi.

I know this doesn't answer the OP's question so you can downvote my post all you want but I find it funny how the English language gives a rather pompous meaning to a word that really simply means "author". I wonder how that came about...

Hmmm...I guess I would have to say Tim Schafer. His humor is apparent in his games.

Tetsuya Takahashi I guess, is there an auteur of the Tales of series?

Edit: Maybe Kosuke Fujishima or Yoshito Higuchi.

An Auteur is described as being a single person who's creative vision shines throughout a work. Originally applying to film directors, this certainly applies to video game makers as well.

Who is your favorite Auteur?
