Charles Darwin? We are studying evolution in Biology right now!

As a non-believer, I gotta say this kind of stuff has always bugged me. It seems disingenuous and just makes the other side angry with no real goal attained. I feel the same way about the Flying Spaghetti Monster too. Upsetting the opposition does nothing but make them dig in their heels even more.

I may be mistaken, but the Darwin Day thing seems places the emphasis on the man himself, rather than his theory of natural selection. It's just another thing for the anti-evolution crowd to point towards and say "Hey, you guys DO worship Darwin!" I know that's not what the intention is, but I think it's easy for someone to take it like that. It's just something that's always bugged me, I guess.

McAwesomeo says:
Darwin was a heretic. He tried to disprove the fact that all life was divinely created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

A lot of people get a day. Martin Luther King gets a day, but it's not about Civil Rights. What did Washington do on his birthday? Nothing, all his accomplishments happened on other days throughout the year, but he's honored on President's Day, and the person is honored, not the accomplishment. I see no difference here.

The creationist crowd is always going to use words like worship and faith for the evolution crowd because that's how they think, regardless of whether or not those words are a mockery to the evolution crowd.

That's like the only thing that people take away from Dawkin's book, and that's sad. The entire book boiled down from hundreds of pages to 3 words. I bet he would take that out now if he could so it wouldn't cloud the message that the book was conveying.

Oh, I understand it, but I also don't think that Darwin should have a day if Newton doesn't, Einstein doesn't, and so on. It just muddies the water for everyone. It also seems to unintentionally say that the current theory of evolution is the same as the one Darwin wrote. I dunno. I get both sides of it, I'm just uncomfortable with the idea of it in general, I guess.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 12, 2013 2:01:31 PM PST
It's frustrating how so many of his quotes are taken out of context on both sides. Agendas get in the way of the ideas.

Ian B. says:
It may be about the man, but without the theory, there is no Darwin Day and he is just another man.

EDIT: Not saying I believe one way or the other. Just saying, you dont remember the man, you remember what they did to get there.

newton has a day, we have a whole holiday for him, all our families get together, we watch movies together, sing songs, give each other gifts
