I should have bought one of those slim PS2s. I had meant to but just never got around to it. It looks like it's too late now.

PS2 introduced me to Online Gaming with Socom II. I will NEVER forget playing Foxhunt (my 1st ever online map) and thought how AWESOME online was. PS2 was/is a Great Console.

You mean AMD... Nvidia was in the original Xbox and the PS3.

The original Xbox was discontinued because the GPU manufacturers quit making them. Microsoft's current contract with Nvidia is much more secure than the one back then.

Yeah, I highly doubt the PS Death will be BC. Sony wants to release yet another God of War collection.

PS1 was discontinued in '06, after 11 years.
The first Xbox was discontinued in 2007, after 6 years.

Big difference.

They combined their Divisions half way through the original Xbox's lifecycle. So no one can say for sure since the division includes Embedded systems (Windows Embedded, Windows CE, probably Windows RT) Devices (MSN TV/Web TV, Mediaroom, Zune, probably the Surface, Xbox & PC Accessories), and Entertainment (Microsoft Game Studios, Encarta, and some other software).

How is it irrelevant? Their business strategy seemed to work pretty well so far. Didn't they actually post a profit for the first time a couple of years ago in the Xbox section?

I'm confused as to why you bring up completely irrelevant points.

The PS2 had quite a few missteps here and there as well, but Sony didn't abandon the platform for over a decade. Nintendo is currently writing the same story with the DS platform.

Success and longevity come from continued support and a reasonable price point. Microsoft has currently positioned itself to all but give up on it's own console next year. Which will leave a lot of Q4 2012 gift recipients with that wonderful abandoned feeling. Ish like that doesn't go over well when MS tells them it's time to buy a New generation Xbox (720/Durango/Loop/Infinity).

Yeah, Microsoft sure didn't sell many Xbox 360s, did they?

Lyrick_ says:
They obviously learned little to nothing about what worked and what didn't work with their original design, or what worked and didn't with their competitors offerings.

Once again with a new console in the works for next year they have roughly 2/3 games in their hopper (LocoCycle, Matter, and Ascend: New Gods) and none of them look retail. Continued First Party support ensures the longevity of a console, and lets even really late adopters know that the console they just purchased will have ongoing support. This keeps consumers from disregarding your system entirely, just ask a Saturn owner how it felt when the Dreamcast was announced and the Saturn was totally abandoned, just like the 32X and Sega CD where when the Saturn was released.

MS fragmented their original 360 audience with multiple Skus totally forgetting that when every console has a Hard drive (like in the original Xbox) developers have a consistent baseline to work with.

They really dropped the ball early with initial Hardware quality issues.

"The Xbox wasn't even on the market long enough to learn anything beyond console gamers will pay to connect their console to their own internet. "

Based on that statement YOU made, it doesn't matter.

Lyrick_ says:
Really, Why does continued support from a first party matter?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 28, 2012 11:34:29 AM PST
Why does that matter? What they learned from one console launch to the next is the important part, no?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 28, 2012 11:32:42 AM PST
Lyrick_ says:
With the exception that Sony continued to develop games for the PS1 even into 2003.

Fine, four years. Let's look as Sony then, shall we?

September 9, 1995 > PS1 Launch Date
March 4, 2000 > PS2 Launch date.

Really not that different, huh?

Nov 18th 2001 => Xbox Launch
Nov 22nd 2005 => Xbox 360 Launch

Microsoft Game Studios stopped developing (not publishing) games really early before its end of life (releasing only 3 in house games in 2005, a map pack (Halo 2) and a collection (that included the map pack).

I think five years is a decent amount of time, no?

It's a good thing that MS learned from the Xbox's hardware issues and the 360 had no hardware issues.

Yes, and I am aware that you have many niche titles that will never see the light of day on PSN. I just don't see Sony offering BC for PS2 discs.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 28, 2012 10:55:15 AM PST
*sigh* I know. It's just frustrating.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 28, 2012 10:54:45 AM PST
I wouldn't actually be surprised if that happened. Uncharted Collection 2 with more trophies and super HD graphics.

LOL, it's already there dude. And the masses couldn't be happier as these HD collections fly off the shelves.
