They wouldn't necessarily have a precise "this is how many we've sold" number, but they can certainly come up with an approximate number sold by talking to retailers when they reorder. So MS probably can't announce it when the 70 millionth 360 is sold, but they can know fairly accurately (though not precisely) that "more than 70m have been sold" at a certain point (presumably well after the 70 millionth 360 is sold.)

Not to mention that XBL will certainly make a record of the console ID number when a new system is signed into XBL.

Not to mention that the article you posted specifically says that is is 70 million shipped according to Sony.

It's pretty amazing Sony and MS have sold almost the same amount of consoles. Has that ever happened before in previous generations?

This is particularly an anomalous generation, as Microsoft has been quite successful with almost no success in Japan (and was only supported by Japanese devs because they wanted to sell their games in the U.S.) I don't believe that has ever happened before.

Xbox controller is too big for me. PS3 is perfect. But that's why I play Kinect on XBox 360.

With Kinect on the 360, you ARE the controller. Are you saying that you're too big for yourself?

PS3 and Xbox 360 both at 70 million!... Funny how much people argue about how great second place is... since Nintendo is at 96 or so million :3

Well since this is a an XBox/PS3 discussion it's funny you bring up the Wii. Everyone knows they are in 1st place. No one is arguing that!

There are those that still deny it :p

As for the other 2. I added 1 to each list. Though Does this list count systems shipped to replace broken ones? cause if that's the case... I wonder how that would add up.

The thing is, selling the 2nd most or 3rd most consoles is not really an achievement worthy of note (this is a three-way race, after all). But selling 70m+ consoles is an achievement worthy of note, as only 10 consoles in history have sold that many (PS2, DS, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Wii, GBA, PSP, 360, and now the PS3.)

I mean, whether or not MS finishes behind Sony this gen, they're ecstatic about selling nearly three times as many 360s as they sold Xboxes.

Weren't Genesis and Super Nintendo neck and neck for a while?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 18, 2012 3:29:03 PM PST
They were pretty close, but the Genesis ended up selling 40m units and the SNES finished with about 49m units.

However, SEGA decided to cancel the Genesis before the SNES.

Putting they're in DVvM's sentence would be incorrect Pacino, but nice try!

He was clearly correcting your sentence, but since you since you seem to have a pretty low capacity for grammar, you're probably not too good at perceiving who a statement is directed at, either. But nice try!

That is why I played my Xbox more and eventually exclusively (both generations) was due to the the size and comfort of the controller.

I did the Kinect workout game yesterday, it was pretty fun....Jesus I am out of shape.
