GameStop president Tony Bartel has said that demand for the PlayStation 4 has been quite strong since it was announced, according to Develop. GameStop is running a program that has people sign up to be the "first to know" about any new information or pre-order listings for the PlayStation 4. More than 600,000 people have signed up in just three weeks.

"With only a glance at the PS4, gamers are excited and eager to know more," said Bartel. "Within just a few weeks, more than 600,000 people have signed up, showing strong demand for this new console."

"The level of enthusiasm we're seeing from GameStop customers demonstrates how the promise of PS4 is resonating with gamers, and we're looking forward to unveiling more about the new platform in the coming months," said SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton.

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 last month at a media event in New York City.

Gamestop employees are signing up everyone who has a powerup rewards account, whether they request it or not. Which makes their figures completely misleading. Not to say there isn't excitement for the system, but Gamestops information on customer excitement is just plain wrong.

None of the ones I've gone to have done that. I signed up on the Game Stop website shortly after the announcement.

Gamestop wants the PS4 to do well because they know if Microsoft has their way, they will cease to exist.

Interesting. You know, it didn't really dawn on me until the following day after the news conference: Sony effectively announced a new console without even showing it. I gotta say, I think that's a first.

Hopefully they learned their lesson from the PS3 launch and the PS4 won't cost $500-$600...that'd be the kiss of death.

Didn't the Wii-U do the same thing?

JJ4prez says:
The Wii U did it didn't? Their first announcement just had the tablet.

The PS4 will cost 399.99 and the deluxe at 449.99 (I would bet money), and they can't show all the goods!

Rons Mkay says:
They didn't show it because they need something at E3. If they showed the console in February it would have been a momentary hit that would have faded from attention after M$ did their next gen unveiling. By leaving specific details off the table until closer to launch Sony kept some marketing power in its back pocket.

Maybe it did, I didn't pay attention to the Wii U announcement.

They are really annoying about this too, as they are with any of their mandatory plugs when you check out. I scoffed when asked if I wanted to be signed up for this and said "Please, I'll know about this stuff before you do. VGF, beeyotch!"

Good point. You're right, they probably are withholding the actual unveiling of the console so they can control the news cycle on another day.

You could see it, they just didn't really try to bring any attention to it... Mainly because it just looks like a box...

The Wii U reveal didn't specifically show the console, but it was there if you looked for it. It just wasn't front-and-center. Plus, they also had playable demos there, so the journalists took a picture of the console from the kiosks.

From what I hear, the design of the PS4 console isn't even finalized yet.

From what I hear, the PS4 is going to be formless, like water, and have a light scent of orange-cranberry.

They will probably finalize the design by E3 so they can reveal it there. My guess is it will be black and look like a game console.

.........Why?

Sure it's a new console and all that, but 600k people want to buy new hardware when the current hardware will have most of the games anyway?
