Don't man the harpoons quite yet - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has something to say.

Ubisoft started removing the cloak from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag today. The new open-world action game stars a pirate assassin who sails the high seas, plunders for booty, and harpoons whales.

That last part, the whaling, is something we haven't seen in many video games before, and PETA decided to give us its feelings on the matter. A spokesperson from the anti-animal cruelty organization provided the following statement:

Whaling-that is, shooting whales with harpoons and leaving them to struggle for an hour or more before they die or are hacked apart while they are still alive-may seem like something out of the history books, but this bloody industry still goes on today in the face of international condemnation, and it's disgraceful for any game to glorify it. PETA encourages video game companies to create games that celebrate animals-not games that promote hurting and killing them.I asked Ubisoft for its response to the PETA statement and will update this story when it gets back to me.

In 1986, the International Whaling Commission enacted a ban on commercial whaling due to intense overhunting that pushed many species to the brink of extinction. Some countries, notably Japan, wish to lift this ban. Japan currently hunts whales under an exemption to the IWC ban for scientific research.

Well, thanks for giving it to them.

I can't wait to go whaling in this game. That's going to be awesome. I hope that they allow Move/Kinect support for slicing open the whale after it's caught.

Oh, and PETA, that whaling protest group that has their own TV show was just classified as pirates by our own court system.

Nobody tell them about the main power source in Dishonored. On another note who now wants to play ACIV more now that PETA hates it.

I hope Ubisoft has enough balls to make an easteregg/sidemission about that.

Its ok if you hack up human beings in Assassins Creed, we have no issue there - but for the love of the light - dont dare harm a whale...!

All I have to say about this:

Save the whales, mother f#$%^er.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 5, 2013 5:21:30 AM PST
Indeed. Though don't attack me, PETA will take it as a cruelty against badgers!

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 5, 2013 5:22:49 AM PST
Cause whales are more important.

Voice of god says:
I know it's fun to hat on PETA, and usually I'm happy to join in and mock them for their stupid garbage, but this is probably the first time they've made a legitimate point about the treatment of animals in a video game. Whaling was and still is pretty messed up and cruel, and irresponsible practices caused tremendous problems with wiping out species. Glorifying it and making it into a fun game just seems like a bad idea.
