Several people mentioned Zak & Wiki and I concur. That is a great game.

Good point--and Avalon Code would make my DS list too.

I did enjoy this game however it was easy to walk away from. I was in the middle of playing this when i think Sleeping dogs came out and have not touched it since. Although i will at some point esepcially since i got it for like $7

Because that is how I roll.

Issue with asking the VGF for a hidden gem is that we have played almost every game out there to death. Nothing is hidden besides niche, obscure, and honestly turrible games. The hidden gems that are essential are just what we consider our favorite games here.

While it's true that the DS is last gen, that also makes it the same generation as the Wii, PS3, and 360. It was the first 7th gen console, in fact, though followed very closely by the PSP.

Speaking of which, Avalon Code.

Katawa Shoujo.

Why are you asking random VG questions to people on the street?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 13, 2012 7:49:28 AM PST
Essential, maybe.

Hidden, probably not.

I think someone may have. I LOVE that game. Link to the Past is my favorite game, so 3DDGH was basically a must-buy.

THe Fight: Lights Out - what a fun (but hard and sometimes frustrating) Move game. Gets very little love for various reasons I can understand, the primary being you need two Move controllers. PLayed it for a few hours this weekend and my arms are's a pretty good workout.
Split/Second - so little love the developer was shut down.
Resistance 3 - sales were well below expectations.

Ask any other video playing public out on the street though, and see the blank stares you get.

I agree they're essential. But hidden gems? These games seemed to get a lot of attention from gamers and the media at large. Especially Dark Souls.

A hidden gem to a super VGF nerd is an iphone game.

I guess I just don't think of those as hidden, since we seem to discuss them so much. :)

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 13, 2012 6:57:05 AM PST
Nope, I refuse to budge on this. Both are essential.

I think Dark Souls is by far the better game of the two though.

throw out demon's souls and we have a deal

Not one damn mention of Demon's Souls or Dark Souls.

Honestly, I believe these two are the most deserving of essential.

Sleeping Dogs

Not sure how "hidden" it is, but I finished it last night and it's just a great game.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Killer 7 meets Devil May Cry. Like Killer 7, the gameplay isn't amazing, but you don't care because you just want to see the crazy levels and see how the narrative unfolds.
