I would put DS9 and BSG (and maybe B5) ahead of both Star Wars and Mass Effect.

But I'm much more of a Trek fan than a Wars fan.

Absolutely.

Without clicking on this, is it from The Fifth Element?

Surprised no one said Firefly. Guess I will...Firefly>Mass Effect

And Ender's Game series.

I really do like ME a lot. I just like a lot of other Sci-fi stuff.

I forgot to factor in B5. It has been too long since I watched it. Where's my B5, Netflix?!

Neither Firefly nor Ender's Game (except the first book) are really space opera.

Star Trek will always be first for me but Mass Effect is definitely second, no doubt about it.

I don't think there's enough Firefly to have it really stand up to longer running space operas.

I mean, the entire run of the series plus the movie tie-in is shorter than any one of the three Mass Effect games.

The thing about Space Opera is that it's supposed to be vast both in scale and in themes, Firefly could have gotten there but with only 14 episodes it can't really compare to 90+ hours of Mass Effect, 75 episodes of BSG, 110 episodes of B5 (plus six movies), 176 episodes of DS9, etc.

It's themes and scope being less vast and sort of intimate and it's run-time being so short make Firefly more of a Space Western than Space Opera.

Mass effect is up there with the greats. Btw anyone play online since retaliation released. I'd like to hook up with some people to play gold if anyone is interested

I'm not too clear on what constitutes space opera, but things like Star Trek (all five series) always seemed too episodic to really qualify to me.

I agree that Firefly is more of a Western with maybe S/O elements.

"I mean, the entire run of the series plus the movie tie-in is shorter than any one of the three Mass Effect games."

Fourteen episodes plus a two hour or so movie...sixteen hours or so (a bit less, obviously, but screw math right now). Excellent point.

You can totally beat ME2 in less than 10 hours, though.

You mean the 1st Mass Effect? Then yeah, but I'd compare it more towards Star Trek.

Just a little rant with the 2nd and 3rd's story:
2 and 3 hardly had a story to follow. Two was just a task machine with missions with little meaning, don't get me started on the ending of that beast (I actually think its WORSE than the 3rd's ending). Third, yet another task machine, but lets tie many predictable deaths of a couple of your members that really had little emotional value (because it was obviously a boring task). Actually, the 3rd was about 75% all cheezy scenes.
If they wish to kill off members of your crew don't do (A) 2nd's route (kill them all off at the final battle) and (B) Make them incredibly predictable tasks..
The 1st did it right: You had no idea you were going to have to choose between kaiden and ashley in that mission.

Yes, yes it is.

I think "completing ME2 in less than 10 hours" is like "watching a television show and skipping all the episodes that are one-offs that don't contribute to the overarching plot."

You miss a lot of stuff in your speedrun of ME2.

Yeah, but I did this after I had finished the game. I just wanted to see if I really COULD lose Shepard and my whole team.

So Star Wars doesn't count? Firefly is at least longer than the original trilogy.

If Riddick can be called a Space Opera, Firefly sure can -

And Ender is a Space Opera. There are a good amount of books for Ender's story and another set for Bean.
