The first three were good. From Goblet of Fire on, it's an awkward angsty teen fest. The films didn't do the books justice. They even pronounced Voldemort's name wrong!

the movies didn't do the books justice? books 6 and 7 didn't do the books justice!. they're both utter crap, with very few good parts in them.

Regardless, they are great, entertaining movies, with great acting.

Book 5 was the worst IMHO, 6 was better and 7 better still though none of those three lived up to the heights of the first 4 books.

The later movies were better for dropping a lot of the angst, especially of book 5.

Donkey Punch says:
The third movie is where it got a lot better. The first two movies where directed by Chris Columbus, the director of Home Alone.

Goblet of Fire was my personal favorite, followed by Prisoner of Azkaban. the books, not the movies. OotP was kind of disappointing. HBP and DH were horrible.

The books started off about a young wizard overcoming adversity and self-empowerment, to being about as many magical trinkets as they could jam into the damn thing. ooh, look, Horcruxes! oh, and here are the super-duper deathly hollows to save the day! pissed me off to no end. honestly the only reason why i even bought DH was because i hate not finishing a series once i start it. i sure as hell didn't get it because i enjoyed HBP so much.

I'm surprised Rowling didn't manage to work in Excalibur into the plot. oh wait, she's got a convenient proxy for it with the sword of gryffindor (excalibur) being pulled out of the hat (stone).
