Black Ops 2' smashes sales records: Over $500 million in first 24 hours

I'm not one to post articles here but if this was already discussed, my bad.

"Who said the gaming industry is dead? Not the people at Activision. Just a short week after Microsoft announced that Halo 4 sold over $228 million within it's first 24 hour, Activision came through and smashed that number... as well as their own.

In a press release earlier this morning, Activision announced that "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" has sold over $500 million within it's first 24 hours of release. Five hundred million dollars in 24 hours. Not only does that set records across the board, it smashes their own record set by Modern Warfare 3 at $400 million last year."

Damn, that is a huge increase from MW3.

MW2- 310M
Blops 1- 360M (+50M)
MW3- 400M (+40M)
Blops 2- 500M (+100M)

Last year MW3 made $1 Billion in 16 days.

to put in perspective... 3 days ago this was talked about:

"Halo 4" is on track to reach $300 million in global sales in the first week, making it the biggest "Halo" launch in history and the biggest entertainment launch of the year to date.
**In the first 24 hours of its release, "Halo 4" garnered more than $220 million worldwide**

Blops 2 killed that by more than double in a day....but it's also on multiple platforms/consoles.

Should I feel the same about Mario and its 12 offsprings?

The industry has been trying to replicate the success of Mario for decades without success.

It actually might. You can just envision the execs at all the other companies see this and the irises of their eyes turning into dollar signs.

OT: Started a playthrough of Oblivion last night, going sword and board Imperial this time. Never done it and I hope I can stick with it. I always go stealth or magic. Still awesome, still beautiful, what a game.

I don't know....

I would think the increase in popularity has made gaming significantly more mainstream....More Kickstarters and more indie games are being bought every year due to more people being "into" gaming, but I understand where you come from as many games are trying to take the COD route and make their games more accessible to the masses to get those huge sales...hurting more natural development.

No, keyword here is offsprings. Mario Kart is not the same game as SMG which is not the same game as Paper Mario. And they don't sell $500 million in a day!

They're already doing it with games like Dead Space, and everything is referenced as a "potential CoD killer" or "not as good as CoD." It's not Activision's fault, it's the rest of the industry that tries to emulate what Activision has with CoD into all of their games to hopefully have the runaway success that CoD enjoys. The problem is that Activision's success, for whatever reason, is UNIQUE.

OT: Coming out of the sewers for the first time and just looking on at that vast expanse of land all around me and feeling insanely overwhelmed is one of my most favorite moments of my gaming career. I've never felt more immersed in a game than at that moment.

Oblivion is still more enjoyable then Skyrim....I never tired of Oblivion and spent many sleepless night on that game....have have yet to lose sleep on Skyrim...

It was the first game I bought on the 360 and spent more of the next several years playing though it....different characters, some without using the fast travel system....and as Fox said....that moment when you exit the sewers for the first time and realize you can go where ever you want is still one of my favorite gaming experiences.

Yup, same here. I have played Oblivion countless times. Hell, after the first time I 100%'d it on a save of over 200 hours, I immediately restarted with a new character. I have beaten Skyrim exactly once, and I never even went back to it after I beat it last year. Skyrim is gorgeous and all that, but Oblivion will always be my Elder Scrolls game of choice.

I was super overwhelmed too. I didn't really "get it" until I was running on the side of a mountain and looked to my right and saw the spire at the capital way off in the distance, I realized that I could actually run all the way there, I can go anywhere. It was a really amazing experience.

Well, look....much worse, Sega got ran out of the hardware industry looking for that lightning in a bottle. Imagine at that point in time, a series this successful was available on all platforms?

What CoD is doing for both the 360 and PS3 platforms is downright incredible. Its like GTA all over again. You have to have system sellers, bottom line. Without them, there would be no base to sell everything else. If the 360 and PS3 were battling it out at 30m a piece vs 70m, Skyrim wouldn't have happened the way it did. Now Skyrim opened the door for something even bigger.

I miss that moment in time, because now when I come out of the sewers, I know exactly where I'm going: I can go across the river and fight those two bandits, or I can walk along the bank and kill some mudcrabs and collect some Ninroot, or head to Lipsand Tarn and get the Vampire Curse, etc.

I like Skyrim more in all honesty now. I appreciate it so much more than Oblivion just because of the necessary changes they made for Skyrim. I think the world is much more vibrant and NPC is more entertaining than Oblivion. I love Oblivion, put at least 1500 hours into it, but it was boring sometimes.

I'm not totally against CoD being successful, I just don't want the other companies to think they need to make CoD clones and that is all.

I agree there. I do think at this point theres CoD, theres BF....and no one is trying to compete there anymore. Hell, SOCOM has been buried.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 16, 2012 8:04:45 AM PST
Should be 2 melee bandits and one ranged.

I always go into that dungeon there too to collect some. . . crap what are the stones that recharge staves called?
