The 3G-capable model of the PlayStation Vita has been dropped from $299.99 down to $199.97 at selected Sony stores across North America for an unconfirmed period, Joystiq reports.

According to Joystiq, a few Sony store employees informed them that the 3G model is being discontinued.

The $199.97 PS Vita 3G bundle, which currently can only be bought in-store, includes the PS Vita handheld, 8GB memory card and a PlayStation Network voucher for a free game.

Online retailers such as Walmart, GameStop and Amazon still list similar PS Vita 3G bundles from $299.99. The online Sony store lists a PS Vita 3G bundle for $249.99.

Last month, Sony announced a PS Vita price drop in Japan from 24,980 yen to 19,980 yen, which went into effect Feb. 28. A week later, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida stated that the price drop would not come to North America.

Polygon has reached out to Sony for comment about the price drop and the rumored discontinuation of the PS Vita 3G model.

I wonder if Sony will drop the 3G version all together?

Pretty sure they will; this is clearance pricing.

Seriously? I kind of want one of these now that I can share my data plan across devices. I wonder if I could get Gamestop to price match?

I think they should. I might be different, but I hate the whole 3G thing idea on multiple devices. I really don't need internet access with me at all times. Not only do I not have a smartphone, but I don't plan on getting one any time soon. I have internet at work and wifi at home. Not sure how that isn't enough internet.

I dont know about Gamestop, but you should be able to get best buy to price match. I still want to wait on the next iteration hoping that it will include a hard drive.

I've been eyeing a Vita lately, and the price point is tempting, but I really don't need the 3G. Does this imply that there's some newer or thinner version that's coming out, perhaps around E3?

Keller, for those us who travel over extended periods of time, it's nice to have mobile internet access sometimes. I can't take my home or my desktop with me, so I use my smart phone.

I don't have Wi-Fi at work, and sometimes I would really appreciate it with the Vita for Near and for updating trophies and such. I'm a trophy nut so I like comparing my trophies to other people's.

I think you have to subscribe to a new 3G contract to get this price.

Sure, though most airports and pretty much all hotels have free internet thus I use my iPad. I am not bashing anybody, to each their own. I am saying I personally don't get it. I accept I am the strong one on this. I just already pay $60 for internet, I have no desire to add another $30 to this.

Oh I know, I was just providing an example is all. I spend a lot of time at softball fields because my daughter plays on a travel team, so my smart phone is my link to the world for the majority of the weekend.

As soon as I work through Prof Layton and KH:3DS, my 3DS goes up. :p

If I can add this to my existing plan, it won't cost me any more at all.

Cool, I think I am done with handhelds until I upgrade my PC and get the Shield.

That's really my thing too. I don't have time for two handhelds and I just really prefer the control/layout experience on the Vita.

Dang. And right after they told us they wouldn't price drop in NA.

Well I am not an JRPG fan so the Vita is almost worthless to me. Although Rayman Origins and Hot Shots Golf were wonderful.

I thought the Vita had no JRPGs?

Yeah, I thought the 3DS was the current place to go for RPGs.
