Wii U Lan

It's an adapter that you plug into a USB port so you can use a wired network connection, such as Nyko Net Connect for Wii

Exactly right, it is an adapter plugged into a USB port to use a wired connection instead of wireless. It works exactly the same as on the Wii and generic ones work fine as well. So if you can't or don't want to use the perfectly adequate wireless connection you can get an adapter for usually less than $10 on ebay or here. Just plug it in, go into the connection settings, choose wired connection and you're done.
