Beau says:
Why do they pay so much money to try and get elected to a job that will pay them so little in comparison?

For example, the president of the United States makes roughly $400,000 a year and over four years that translates to 1.6 million dollars. Over eight years it's 3.2 million dollars

Yet, Barack Obama spent 684 million dollars in the last election cycle and Mitt Romney spent approximately 433 million dollars. (source:

So, can we assume that it's not about the money, but rather about the power of the office?

This isn't just limited to presidential candidates either; members of congress are paid roughly $170,000 a year, yet many of them spend many times that to get elected.

It boggles the mind.

Because the money that get spent on the election isn't their money. Its the lobbyist/Sponsors/Bibery/etc, etc... The only time they spend their own money is when... uhhh hmmmm they uhh i'll get back to you on that.

True. I think that even goes for a member of congress as well. Serve a single, two year term in the House and you're set for life!

Well congress gets lots of money from lobbyist that is money they keep often times. The president gets paid for life as well on top of that they make a crap ton of money from books and speaking. Clinton last year was making 100k + a speaking engagement. Ill take 100k for a 30-45 min speach. do that every month and bam you can live pretty nice on top of your 400k a year retirement.

The hookups.

Once you serve your time you get a sweet benefits package for life and you use your time in office to arrange a cushy consulting gig.

Brykume says:
This. Also, politicians now often spend a majority of their time fundraising for their next election. Some cycles, since they are short (2 years), they begin the moment they get into office.

And yeah, the move from public sector to private sector works wonders. You have a great deal of gov't information (and the oppurtunity to craft regulations) then move into the private sector, where you sit on a board and give advice on how to exploit said regulations.

Brykume says:
Very few people get paid like Clinton for speeches, but yes.. a lot of politicians and pundits can easily make 15k+ per speech.

And, do you notice.. now EVERYONE has a book? Any guest on any political show, any pundit, all politicians... everyone. Everyone's selling their shirt and people continue to eat it up, apparently.
