Banner says:
I could argue how it applies to others but I won't. I wouldn't use the reasoning because it's narrow minded and encourages a judgmental attitude and limits growth and love. Iow, it goes against my principles.

Ahh...I see we have a believer in absolutes.

Not really anywhere to progress at this point if you refuse to analyze the Bible in any objective sense while proclaiming it to be morally sound.

You know the "bad karma" soundclip for Fallout 3? Every time I do something evil, I hear that noise.

Fair enough.

Ah, somebody who doesn't believe in absolutes, and yet the Bible absolutely advocates evil. Sounds contradictory to me.

Frankenzubaz says:
Things are good or evil only in proportion to the amount of harm they cause. Harm is defined by your common sense.

I think most people have a sense of what is right or wrong. It's a natural, and is probably an evolutionary mechanism meant to ensure survival of a social species such as ourselves.

I think that murdering people is evil...in fact, so does your god. Unless he tells people to murder others. Then, you know, it's righteous.

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

And people who use the above sentence.

I like Heinlein's definition of sin: "Sin lies only in hurting others unnecessarily. All other 'sins' are invented nonsense. (Hurting yourself is not sinful -just stupid.)"

anyone or anything that demands to be worshiped and threatens you with eternal torture for not doing it deserves to be despised and cursed, not worshiped.

Nightmare says:
So, if a serial killer's common sense tells him that killing is a good thing, then it's not harmful?

"Well, all the things he listed rank pretty heinous by Biblical standards."

How do you figure that?

"I think most people have a sense of what is right or wrong. It's a natural, and is probably an evolutionary mechanism meant to ensure survival of a social species such as ourselves.

I think that murdering people is evil...in fact, so does your god. Unless he tells people to murder others. Then, you know, it's righteous."

If most people have a sense of what is right and wrong, and it's based on evolution, then again we have no absolute morals. Just in instinctual tendency towards certain behaviors. If it's all instinct, how can anything be moral or evil? Lions aren't moral or evil, and by an evolutionary moral view neither are humans.

Frankenzubaz says:
A serial killer, clearly, doesn't have common sense.

You're welcome. Pick and choose what he said that you agree with. Discard that which does not mesh with your own conscience. It's what he would want us to do.

For example, I like what he says about moral behavior, but I don't necessarily agree with it entirely.

You're the only one who said "absolutely", I merely provided examples and allowed others to make their own assessments ;)

*Thump thump thump* Keep it up! Don't mess up the binding though...

Nightmare says:
Obviously I agree with that, but how do you know we're not the ones lacking common sense? If you assume that somebody is wrong about something, you must have some source for this belief. The serial killer can assume that you lack common sense, but why is he wrong?

I've never believe in God as long as i can remember. Somtimes I wonder how comforting it must be to have blind faith. I say that without any sarcasm.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 27, 2012 11:47:12 AM PST
Please see the quote about sin. That is what I believe.

You didn't really respond to me, though. Why is it okay for your god to tell his people to murder? We're not talking about war here. This is about full-blown massacres of noncombatants. Do you believe that these acts are moral because god commanded them?

He's not wrong. His actions are. They're wrong because they cause harm.
