Nintendo stated that the battery will remain charged for 3-5 hours. Is the battery draining even while it is not being used? Today I played my wii u and as soon as I turned it on, I checked my battery status on the gamepad. It showed 3 cells so then I started to play a game and not even 10 minutes later the red light came on Really!!! This has happened to me for the past few weeks and I rarely play my wii u and when I do play it, It's probably less than a hour so why is the battery dying so fast? Is this happening to anyone else?

You could have a bad battery or there is a loose connection somewhere. I used to have a similar issue with my Xbox 360 rechargeable battery pack, though not in such a short timespan that you talk here. Is it still under warranty?

"I rarely play my wii u"

There's the problem. It'll run out when it's inactive.

The gamepad does eat up a considerable chunk of battery even while the system is turned off, but nowhere near that bad. Either you have a friend playing your video games while you're away or you got hit with a bum battery.

No one besides my mother comes over to my apartment and my girlfriend is not a gamer. I think it might be a bad battery, so I'm considering calling nintendo just so they can tell me that this is normal.

I haven't had any problems with the battery, but that might be because I use it a lot. Besides, the charger has a long enough cord that it can basically reach as far as the signal from the Wii U to the game pad can go.

GarionOrb says:
Sadly, yes, the battery is somehow drained while not playing. I have the same experience. But, it's a comfort to know that the Wii U GamePad isn't the only device with this problem. My PSP did it, my laptop does it...must be a battery thing. If you got the Deluxe Set, you can just set the GamePad on the cradle every now and then if you don't use your Wii U that often.

I'm more worried about what will happen later on, when the thing has difficulty holding any kind of a charge. I dread paying $150 for another one...

I completely agree $150 isn't worth it

DVvM says:
It's a law of physics thing. All batteries, regardless of what they're made of, or what they're in will discharge over time even if not in use. The things that really affect this are the chemistry of the battery, the level of charge, and the temperature at which it is stored.

Batteries release stored energy via a chemical reaction, and there's no way to absolutely prevent that chemical reaction from occurring (it's a second law of thermodynamics thing, "charged battery" is a low-entropy state.) Primary batteries (i.e. non-rechargeable ones) tend to suffer less from self-discharge, but the sort of batteries you use in the Nintablet controller should really only lose 2-3% of full charge per month of inactivity.

PSP was the other one that instantly came to my mind. I'd leave it off for a week and a half, get a game and have to charge it.

On the battery front, you can buy replacements from Nintendo or Nyko.

A better test and way to present this information to everyone is to charge it all the way until the light turns off and then time it to tell us how long it lasted for you. Could be that you really only had 10 minutes left and it accidentally told you three bars at first. I have devices that do things like that.

All I know is on my own Wii U, it lasts about four hours each time, more if I'm just watching Netflix or using TVii or something. I think Black Ops II does make it last more like 3.5 hours if playing that straight and using the pad as your screen, but the fact that you can put the plug directly into the pad rather than worry about a cradle makes it pretty easy to keep playing.

Another good thing to do is play it till it blinks and charge it all the way, as cycling a battery is better for it than always charging it to 50 percent or something. Hope that helps.

I noticed my Gamepad would die pretty quickly when I gamed with it then I realized the thing is on constantly while I watch Netflix so mystery solved.

Aku says:
If he has to time to schedule it in, he should start playing as soon as he notices the charge light go off. Then either play a game or just run Netflix until it dies. He'll be able to see just how good/crappy the battery is with a quick check in the game log.

That's how batteries work--they lose charge over time, even if not in use. Some batteries are better about it than others, but it happens to even the best. You can extend their lives by making sure their connections aren't next to any conductive material (so, basically, taking them out of your devices and storing them so that they aren't end to end).

It also depends on the device--certain devices will drain batteries while off faster than others. And if you just leave the device in sleep mode, that drains the battery even faster.

semi-ninja'd.

The gamepad holds a charge worse than Abe Simpson holds a thought, but with the nyko replacement coming out (already out?), I'm not too worried, even though it's a bit cheap on the big N's behalf in the first place.

Also, maybe it's because I haven't played it in a long time, but the dpad feels a bit laggy when playing Punch Out.

bet the battery life on the 3DS is just as bad and yeah i'm sick of having to recharge the Wii U gamepad every 4 or so hours, my PS3 controller battery lasts for a whole week or so before needing a recharge.

Edit: if any of you have ever played Phantasy Star Universe for PC and X360. they're finally comin out with a 2nd game for PC so far this year and it'll be free to play online.

The first time around I read that as "worse than Abe Lincoln holds a thought" and I said to myself "Wow, that's not very nice to say about a guy who was shot in the head. He's not holding much of anything up there."

Then I reread it and realized I'm a terrible person.

My Gamepad lasts about 4 hours on a charge. Have you been leaving the Gamepad plugged in for extended periods of time (days or weeks)? This is bad for the battery as well. Still, your battery sounds defective, given that the system has only been available for a few months.

In this age where everything is rechargable, I am always amazed how many people don't know the basics of rechargable batteries.

I can't say I have had any issues, though because of the lineup I haven't played many games either.

I leave the game pad on the cradle at all times.

I left my fully charged Wii U gamepad unplugged for a few days and it was completely drained the next time I tried to use it. Not good.

Whats the jesus juice with the Vita's battery? I leave that thing on standby for a week and it still has a full bar when i pick it up...to find i had like 2-3 tabs i never closed to boot.

I can only imagine as time passes the Gamepad with end up with a better battery.

You're right. I've had the same experience with the Vita and it holds a charge for around a week depending on what games I've been playing. Same thing with my nexus 7.
