I didn't have my own Genesis at that time but I had played some Genesis games. I remember getting a Holiday 1992 issue of EGM in the mail (it was over 300 pages!) and every single editor gave Sonic 2 a perfect score of 10.

Not long after that Sega had a deal where people who bought a Sega Genesis could send away for a free copy of Sonic 2. I could have gone with the Model 2 Genesis but chose the original model because it came with the original Sonic the Hedgehog (thus scoring two games instead of one.)

I was really impressed with Sonic 2. We just didn't see many games back then that could move so fast and the casino level was just amazing. I am generally not a fan of Genesis music but I think Sega outdid themselves with that score. I think the only thing that some people complain about is the addition of Tails but he never really bugged me aside from dying too much.

Hard to believe that twenty years have gone by. I still have my original copy and of course have several later versions of the game on lots of platforms like PC, PS3 and 360.

I was actually just coming to post this lol.

I didn't get a chance to play Sonic until I got my model 2 Genesis which came with Sonic 2. I remember at the time drooling over the Genesis because of Sonic and that was all I asked for that Christmas (mom came through with flying colors!). The game just blew me away going from the NES to the Genesis. It wasn't until a year or so later I got my hands on the original Sonic but I never much cared for it because Sonic 2 spoiled me with the spin dash and what have you.

The only time Tails bugged me was on the bonus stages because if he got hit I lost rings which made getting the Chaos Emeralds way harder so I often just switched to Sonic only or if I had a friend over they'd plug in a controller and take over Tails. For so long I wanted to play Mario Bros. with a friend where we were both playing at the same time (wouldn't be until years later with New Super Mario Bros. Wii that this would happen) so the Genesis delivered on that and it just blew my mind.

My all time favorite Sonic game though is still Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The game just felt so epic to me and having the ability to save, all those stages, Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic, and more SEGA outdid themselves in every way possible when building that.

I just got that Sonic Collection for the DS the other day to celebrate! No, not really but I did buy it and this is cool. It's great that Sonic is actually still a somewhat prevalent figure in video game culture even though Sega really isn't anymore..

My fuzzy childhood memories with the Sega (I still call it that in my head instead of the Genesis) are primarily focused on Sonic 2, mostly because it was probably the only one I had real difficulty with. Those last two boss fights without a single coin? That was a bitch to achieve as a kid.

I had a Genesis, and remember how eagerly I anticipated Sonic 2. I bought the game with birthday money, and was very pleased. I think it remains one of the best 2D platformers ever made.

My only complaint was how bad the slowdown was when you played split screen and one of the players lost all their coins. So much for Blast Processing...

Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the best 2d platformers of all time!

Still have my Model 1 with Sonic the Hedgehog and my Model 2 with Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Did the Model 3 get bundled with a Sonic game? I just have it in a normal box.

I have this friend who was a Nintendo guy growing up but likes Sonic games, and I annul our friendship every time he says coins when playing Sonic.

FACT: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 warped the sexuality of an entire generation of children. This day should live in infamy, not be celebrated.
