Verbose says:
The problem with New Year's Resolutions is that the very act of making them proves you don't have enough motivation to keep the resolution. If something is really important to you, you aren't going to wait until New Year's to do it because you'll be wasting precious time toward achieving your goal.

The resolutions I stick to best are the ones I start as soon as I decide to do it. No waiting until the New Year, no waiting until "next week", and no waiting until "tomorrow".

Forever R. says:
Well i think they are built on the idea of being a new person, looking back on what you did last year and deciding what could have been better and changing it. I think most people look at NYR as "I'm going to lose weight" or "I'm going to go to the gym more often". Those are things that can be done anytime.
I think NYR are reflecting on the past and determining what you want out of the New Year!

Not die. This is my normal resolution, and I've been successful to this date at maintaining it.

Joel H. says:
I would say the act of making a new years resolution shows motivation in itself to want to change something. It's the people that go 'meh whatever' that truely don't want change.

For some people with a procrastinative(?) type of personality, a solid date to begin their transformation may be just what they needed. Something set in stone, not just eh it's monday, it's go-time. New year, new date, new them.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 10:41:27 AM PST
I've been successful about 96% of the time.

You're a horn?

Edit: And I just realized how sad it is that I immediately knew what you were referring to.
