Mass Effect 3's added multiplayer feature has caused a bit of confusion amongst players interested in the game's "perfect ending". A lot of the confusion stems from teh [sic] game's Galactic Readiness, which stays at 50% if you don't play the multiplayer or the iOS game, Infiltrator.

In an effort to clear up some of the confusion that arose as a result of Mass Effect 3's multiplayer and Galactic Readiness in relation to the singleplayer "perfect ending", BioWare's Jarrett Lee clarified exactly what determines the ending.

"You do NOT have to play multiplayer to get the best single-player endings," Lee told Mass Effect 3 players.

He did offer a bit of clarification, though.

Your ending(s) are determined by your "Effective Military Strength" (let's call it EMS for now) bar. Focus on that bar - that is your indicator of how well you will do in the end-game.

You can maximize your EMS just by collecting War Assets in the single-player game. There is a certain threshhold of these you would need to exceed (I can't get too specific) but I can tell you there are MORE than the required amount that can be gathered in the single-player campaign.

"Galactic Readiness" is a modifier you can improve by playing multiplayer. That is to say, if you play a lot of multiplayer, you will need less War Assets from single-player to fill up your EMS bar (ie it will balance out the requirements to account for you playing in both modes). Single-player game play does not impact that bar.

EMS = success. EMS can be maximized via collecting war assets alone, even if your Galactic Readiness is 50%.

The MP is a lot of fun...I don't see why you wouldn't want to at least give it a try.

Yup, I've put in a couple of hours. Amazing game, though I never understood the EMS and Galactic Readiness. Glad I found this article, lol!

I am glad that it does have SOME impact on the game. I have mine GR at 100% from last night and plan to play the SP shortly.

AH! Thank you. I was confused about the difference between EMS and Galactic Readiness. That clears it up entirely.

So I can ignore Galactic Readiness if my EMS is high enough. Happy to hear that.

I'm about 20 hours into the SP, I started playing the multiplayer last night for a couple of hours and it was actually pretty fun. Kind of like Gears horde mode with powers and upgrades.

Didn't BioWare say this long long ago?

So that explains why my GR is still at 50%.

Should've been more clear in the game.

They (Bioware) need to put out a patch so you can turn the GR off if you want and just go by the EMS. I don't like basicly being told that I have to play online. Online is cool, but having a choice is better.

Wow. Not only did you not read the article, you didn't even read the subject!

So has anybody figured out how to get 10,000 points worth of war assets yet?

Posted on Mar 21, 2012 12:23:29 PM PDT
I put about 6 hours into the MP, which was 5 and a half more hours than I expected I'd put in before it was released.

Kirksplosion says:
No, but the statement that "You do not need to play multiplayer to get best Mass Effect 3 ending" would still be true if one uses the "ME3 Datapad" on iOS enough. War Assets alone, though? I don't see how.

I don't have an iOS device, and I'm not buying one in order to get the best Mass Effect 3 ending...

I'd assume you're SOL, then. Sorry.

You can fill up the little green bar only playing SP, so I guess that's what they're talking about.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 21, 2012 12:41:20 PM PDT
I don't think so.

Posted on Mar 21, 2012 12:50:54 PM PDT
I was skeptical abou the MP myself. Well, how can I hate it if I never played it?

I put in 5 hours and have GR at 100%. Very fun game mode IMO.

Mrs. User says:
So does someone have the magic number? Or is it possible to fill the whole EMS bar at all?

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 21, 2012 3:36:15 PM PDT
You can fill the bar, but how full it is really has no bearing on your actual EMS.

Posted on Mar 21, 2012 3:42:08 PM PDT
Well, 5000 EMS is required to get the hardest ending to get. It's not really "the best" ending though. There's no current way to hit 5000 EMS without MP as of now (as far as I've heard) my "Master and Commander" unlocking fleet had me at like 6300 EMS with MP% of about 73% readiness.
