Help! We were going to buy our son Skylanders Spyro's Adventure for Christmas, but now we are concerned that it may be phased out and that we might have a hard time finding the older figures to go with it. We know nothing about Skylanders. Do we buy the old version or should we just go right to the new Giants version? Is there a difference besides the size of the characters and do you need to have played Spyro's adventure to know what is going on in Giants? Thanks!

You can play either or. The figures from the first game will work in the second, and if you don't play the original at all, they have/are re-releasing all the old figures again for the second game. So you can skip the first if you want.

My son and I have been having a blast with the original Skylanders Spyro's Adventure for the past year, and we've recently started Giants and are enjoying it too. All of the green-bottomed figures for the original Skylanders Spyro's Adventure will work with Skylanders Giants as well. But when it comes to the new orange-bottom figures, it's a bit more complicated. Basically, all of the orange-bottomed Series 2 Skylanders who were in the original game will work with both Skylanders Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders Giants as well (except lightcore and legendary figures). Here's more thorough explanation, in case anyone is interested:

All Original Skylanders (Green-Bottomed) Figures = Compatible with Both Skylanders Spyro's Adventure & Skylanders Giants

This includes the following figures:

Bash
Boomer
Camo
Chop Chop
Cynder
Dino-Rang
Double Trouble
Drill Sergeant
Drobot
Eruptor
Flameslinger
Ghost Roaster
Gill Grunt
Hex
Ignitor
Lightning Rod
Prism Break
Slam Bam
Sonic Boom
Spyro
Stealth Elf
Stump Smash
Sunburn
Terrafin
Trigger Happy
Voodood
Warnado
Wham-Shell
Whirlwind
Wrecking Ball
Zap
Zook
Dark Spyro (special edition)
Legendary Bash
Legendary Chop Chop
Legendary Spyro
Legendary Trigger Happy

Everything included in the four Adventure Packs from the original game can also be used in both Skylanders Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders Giants:

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Pirate Seas
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Empire of Ice
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Dragons Peak
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Darklight Crypt

* All Series 2 Skylanders (Orange-Bottomed) = Compatible with Both Skylanders Spyro's Adventure & Skylanders Giants

Just fyi, Skylanders Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders Giants figures are on sale at TRU right now. I believe all of the individual Skylanders Spyro's Adventure figures are 40%, and individual Skylanders Giants figures are buy-one-get-one-40%-off.

One more thing: Regardless of which game you choose, as you decide which figures to get, you might want to consider the four Adventure Packs from Skylanders Spyro's Adventure:

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Pirate Seas
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Empire of Ice
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Dragons Peak
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Darklight Crypt

Each of these includes one character figure, one item figure, and a location figure that opens an additional level in the game.

can the 4 levels be added to the Giants game ? since we have them, that would be a great bonus .... very excited for Christmas & a chance to try the new game ... I have Crusher, Bouncer & will grab Swarm this week ... have yet to see Hot Head ....

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 1, 2012 7:07:41 PM PST
Yep, but they are the same levels as they were in the original game.

cool though, to get the Giants in the mix & add onto the game .... maybe they'll make some new level packs in the future ....

Yeah, it is pretty cool that the adventure packs are compatible with both games--and I hope there'll be some new ones for Giants too! :)

I know the original skylanders will work on the new Giant game... but will the Giant Skylanders work on the original game and/or the Spyro's Adventure which I got with an x-box on Black Friday?

Basically, all of the orange-bottomed Series 2 Skylanders figures released with Skylanders Giants who were characters in the original game will work with both Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Spyro's Adventure (except lightcore and legendary figures).

This includes the following figures:

Series 2 Bash
Series 2 Chop Chop
Series 2 Cynder
Series 2 Double Trouble
Series 2 Drill Sergeant
Series 2 Drobot
Series 2 Eruptor
Series 2 Flameslinger
Series 2 Gill Grunt
Series 2 Hex
Series 2 Ignitor
Series 2 Lightning Rod
Series 2 Prism Break
Series 2 Slam Bam
Series 2 Sonic Boom
Series 2 Spyro
Series 2 Stealth Elf
Series 2 Stump Smash
Series 2 Terrafin
Series 2 Trigger Happy
Series 2 Whirlwind
Series 2 Wrecking Ball
Series 2 Zap
Series 2 Zook

My long post above explains the cross-compatibility in more detail. Enjoy the game! :)

That Emu Kid says:
The orange-bottomed skylanders also say explicitly on the package whether or not they will work with Spyro's Adventure.

Yep, that's important to mention too. :) If you are in-store, you can easily tell by looking at the packaging of the Skylanders Giants figures. If you're looking online, you can sometimes see the compatibility information, but it depends on the image shown.

TRU is Toys R Us. I'm not sure if there are still having any sales on the figures, but they were a couple of weeks ago.

G-Money says:
I would start with Spyro's Adventure for this Christmas. It is cheaper now and there are plenty of characters to keep the kids busy until next x-mas (this is what I am doing BTW and Classic Game Girl is the sylander's expert). Then you can buy Giants next year. Why deprive them of the first game.

David Epling says:
This is a great guide listing BUT, Lightcore Drobot,
Lightcore Eruptor, and
Lightcore Prism Break do work for the Spyros adventure even though they are Giants.

saskamazon says:
none of the large size characters will work in the original ... Crusher, Swarm, Hothead etc ... they are exclusively designed to work only in the Giants game as they are the ' Giants' ... lots of fun to be had. will be interesting to see how Disneys Infinity will do with the concept ...

Yep, my five-year-old recently corrected me on that too, lol. Sorry for not updating my post.

What happens if you take a level 14 Series 2 stealth elf into the first game? Given the game 1 level cap was 10?

So if we are playing Giants, is it better just to buy the originals (green bottom) because they are compatible with both games? Do they upgrade the same in Giants? We plan on buying Spyros adventures soon. We need some help!
