Trying to get tickets to Puerto Rico in August, and right now they're about $1000 for two round trip tickets. Ouch! Any suggestions?

I can't really find many options on flights from Houston...

I tend to buy at about 2 months prior but sometimes with air travel you never know.

Does it have to be in August?

August is technically high season but it will also be excruciatingly hot. It's also kinda close to the high hurricane season.

Sadly, travel has become kind of a luxury, my fam is in PR, and it's getting difficult, settling on a date that I can actually afford to go. Normally, rule of thumb, earlier the better? Though sometimes that backfires too? Like maybe 4-7 months in advance? I dunno.

(though, I've been considering visiting in September, smack dab in the middle of hurricane season)

All I am saying, anywhere near the equator, go in the winter seasons. Freaking beautiful and not as hot.

For sure the earlier the better, but if you keep watching sometimes there are random sales. Don't know if Southwest goes to PR, but I think they give you your money back if you already bought tickets and they have a sale.
If you do go Southwest and see the half-Australian stewardess that I'm crushin on, give her a creepy, lingering stare-down for me.
Vayos con dios!

I saw her, I put a surprise somewhere for you that you won't like if you ever make it with her.

haha

Thanks for the suggestions, doods!

And I checked Southwest, they redirect me to AirTran and it costs just as much as everything else.

And Campy, yeah, I fully know how sweltering and miserable the heat will be in August, lol. Unfortunately the date isn't my doing...my sister wants to celebrate my niece's birthday there with my grandmother. Of course, for my sister who lives in Tampa, a ticket to Puerto Rico is dirt cheap. Plus her flight will take her direct to Aguadilla, which is 20 minutes from my grandmother's house. I'd have to fly into San Juan so once I land I have a 2.5 hour drive to look forward to. >:(

In PR that doesn't really fly...December is like, 1 or 2 degrees cooler than say October, that's about it. If you want to enjoy cooler weather, there's a 3 week span between January and February where it is absolutely not freaking Satan's oven.

A 2.5 hour drive to Aguadilla. Could be worse. Could be, I dunno, Aibonito. You should go to Aibonito though. High altitudes, low temperatures.

If you can be ready to go relatively quickly, then you should sign up for notices from the major travel sites, as you'll be able to get tickets really cheap, but you usually only get 48-72 hours notice. Sometimes you get lucky and get up to 96 hours.

When me and the fam went to Jamaica we were on a watch list for tickets and hotel deals. Expedia called us and offered a 5 night 6 day round trip flight and all inclusive hotel for $1290 after tax (total for 2 round trip tickets and an ocean view room). We went, but our plane left something like 32 hours after we were called. We're on the same watch list for this summer.

If you use the travel function on Bing it gives you a recommendation of whether to buy or wait which I recently found to be accurate and useful. It's not a guarantee of course but it saved me a little bit on a flight out East recommending I wait (very nearly to the last minute in my case).

Wow, I didn't even know they did that! Pretty cool! It just told me to wait, and that it's 92% confident that this is the right course of action, lol. Thanks for the tip!

As far in advance as you can be relatively certain your plans are final. With a few exceptions (and those exclusively coming from promotions or sales), airfare only goes up as it gets closer to any given date. And if you want to travel during the summer or the holidays, especially to popular tourist areas, absolutely try to book a year in advance.

I understand it doesn't give a lot of room for spontaneity, but that's the travel industry for you.

Just be sure to keep tabs on it I guess. I've only used it the one time but for all I know it could have some killer deal on a random Tuesday despite the recommendation.

Prices can drop drastically at the last minute (if there were a substantial number of cancellations, or for some other reason there are a large number of seats unfilled), but this is difficult to predict and can just as easily leave you with an extremely expensive, inconveniently placed seat--or even no seat at all.

Similar with Hawaii, no matter when you go the weather is going to be nice. The worst you'll get is a the rainy season and even then if you drive to the other side of the island it might not be raining.
