Late 90s / early 00s CRPGs - how do they hold up today?

As I've mentioned quite a few times here on the forum, I've recently purchased a functioning PC and have been slowly looking into some PC gaming. GoG.com is a site that I've been frequenting, as I've loved reading reviews of the old games I used to play back when I was a pretty heavy PC gamer. However, I'm realizing that there is a whole slew of seemingly excellent RPGs that I never played, and I was just wondering how you guys feel these games have held up over time?

Some of the titles I was looking at was Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights, among others. My RPG experience on PCs is very limited....I was mostly into adventure games, shooters, simulators and strategy games back then. I did play Ultima VII, Betrayal at Krondor, Return to Krondor, and just a few others. I know Baldur's Gate is being re-done sometime this year and I'll definitly be picking that one up, but what do you all think of some of these other CRPGs from this era and how they'd play today?

Neverwinter Nights and Planescape are the only 'old' ones I've played recently from what you mentioned. Neverwinter Nights is still fine IMO, lots of mods to boot. Planescape definitely felt more dated and cumbersome to play but still worth it. Other than that I've played Arcanum: of Steamworks & Magick Obscura and Divine Divinity in recent years to completion. Arcanum plays like Fallout 1/2, cool game if you can get past the pacing of that style of game. Divine Divinity holds up just fine to me but I really liked that game when it was new so nostalgia may have been favorable to it.

Before you buy some of those CRPGS, look at the collections:

Dungeons and Dragons Neverwinter Nights The Complete Collection

Dungeons and Dragons Classic Anthology

They go on sale to around $10 at Amazon and Gamersgate.com

Thanks Capt. I'll keep my eyes on these. As for Baldur's Gate and BG2, I'm planning on getting those new enhanced editions coming out this year, but that Neverwinter Nights set looks awesome.

I really want to play Planescape Torment.

Wish they would release some of these games on Mac.

Loved and enjoyed Fallout1&2, Baldur1&2, Neverwinter Night from back in the days (and still today in fact). Arcanum was fun, but mostly because I was looking for a game similar to Fallout. Currently replaying Baldur 1 now, and it holds up pretty well with the mods. I also purchased planescape recently since that was a bit before my time

Another series from GoG that I can't recommend enough is the Gothic Series, specifically 1&2 (get 3 only if you really love 1&2, and only then with the fan mods installed). Creator of Risen 1&2, it remains one of my favorite action rpg to this day. interesting Stories, memorable factions, combat challenge - all done to keep you on your feet til the very end. Gothic 1's ending is as abrupt (and a bit disappointing) as it can be, but since Gothic 2 picks up from where 1 left off, my initial complaint about 1's ending is pretty much moot.

if you're not a keyboard player, you can xpad it as I'm planning to try on my next gameplay.

What is a CRPG?

McAwesomeo says:
Probably Computer RPG. Not a term I've heard before, so I'm making assumptions.

Yep, computer RPGs. Exclusive to PCs.

I had to Google it, too. I'm seeing Computer RPG as McAwesomeo mentioned. Pretty neat - a platform gets its own genre, aw yeah!

They actually had an article in the most recent Game Informer article from a "CRPG" addict.

I googled it then haha.

I saw the same thing and went in to it expecting it to be about MtG, Yu Gi Oh, and all of that. Must be the nuskool gaming vocabulary. I like to proliferate east vs. west rivalries with my RPG acronyms!

No, those are CCGs.

I know that, it was just my best guess as to what they were talking about when I saw the article at a glance.

Also that.

Can't be any worse than those YRPGs, amirite?!

Yugoslavian RPGs just haven't been the same since 2003, you know?

God, tell me about it.
