So I'm not sure if it's completely dead ... it's unplugged right now. It wasn't hot at all and it wasn't even on very long when it happened. I guess my question is ... if it's NOT the hard drive that's bad ... would I be able to buy a new PS3 and just pop it in?

What was the question, again?

What happened? Did it beep 3 times and shut down?

Die in a fire Flores.

Jason yeah that's what happened.

My 120GB Slim does that a lot. I think it signals a hard drive problem.

Aw... that's awfully nice of you.

I really don't see how Flores asking what the question was requires a wish for his death. Grow up Mog.

I got 3 or 4 years out of the system so I don't really care ... I just don't want to lose my data if and when I buy a new one.

Cinema I wasn't serious dude. Are you new here?

Have you fallen curse to the PS3 3 beeps? What can you do about it? What causes it and what can I do to get rid of it?

There are many things that can cause the PS3 3 beeps:
1) Pressing the eject button when there is no disc in the drive- The PS3 will beep 3 times to warn you that there is nothing in there. Usually this isn't a serious problem.

2) 3 beeps when you turn off the PS3-Trying to turn off the PS3 when it is still accessing the hard drive. If you get the PS3 3 beeps alot when you are turning it off then, before you turn it off next time, check to see if you have any music, videos, games internet etc. running and turn that off. This may solve the problem.

3) Overheating-If you are playing a game and the PS3 suddenly turns off, you get the PS3 3 beeps and it flashes a red light, your PS3 has probably overheated. Leave it for about 20 minutes to cool off then place it in an open, well ventilated, space on a smooth, hard flat surface. Never use it on a carpet; they trap the heat and can block the ventilation vents. Also over time excessive heat can damage the internal components of the PS3.

4) CPU or GPU error- If you try to turn on the PS3 and it beeps 3 times and gives you a flashing red light then you may have a serious problem, the CPU or GPU may have been disconnected from the motherboard. Try the simple fix below; however if that dosen't work, you may have to send your PS3 to Sony or to get a good PS3 repair guide and fix the PS3 3 beeps yourself.

Simple Fix (PS3 Hard Reset):
A hard rest will change your PS3 settings back to the factory settings. To do this:
* Put the PS3 in standby mode
* Press and hold the power button on the console of 10 seconds until you hear 3 beeps

If that doesn't work, then you will either have to send your PS3 to Sony for repair or get a good PS3 repair guide and repair it yourself.
If your PS3 is still under warranty then you should send it to Sony since opening your PS3 will void your warranty. However if you are unlucky and your warranty has expired then you will have to pay $150 to Sony. Also you will have to wait 4-6 weeks to have your PS3 returned.
The cheaper and quicker alternative for those whose PS3 warranty have expired is to get a good PS3 repair guide with step by step instructions on how to repair the problem and repair the PS3. Visit this webpage to see two good PS3 repair guides, but don't just take my word for it! Look at them carefully and decide for yourself!

If the PS3 is busted, don't you lose your saves if it's put in a different PS3?

Do you have Plus and access to cloud saves?

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 19, 2012 5:08:29 PM PST
No sir

Technosapien says:
You will have to re-format the drive if you want to put it into another system, so, yes, you will lose everything on it if you don't back up the saves you want on the cloud. If those saves are really worth it to you, you can get 3 months of Plus for $18 so you can use the cloud.

Bah! I'm going to try and turn it back on now and see what happens.

Hmmm seems fine. I think I will backup the thing just in case.

S. Kinel says:
did it freeze first? if it wasn't hot at all it was probably number 2 and beeped because it was still accessing the harddrive. if that's the case, not really a big deal at all

I tried something for you Mogwai. I have two PS3 slims in the same game room, one is mine and the other is my sons. If you have a new PS3 and insert your old hard drive the ps3 will put an error message and says it is not formatted to the current version. I removed mine and placed it in my son's ps3 and vice-versa and the anwser is it will not work period. I hope your system didn't crap out on you! What were you playing when this happened? This sounds like a potential heat issue.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 20, 2012 3:07:19 AM PST
Yeah I think it just overheated. I was playing FFXIII-2 when it happened but I had it paused for a long time. I was in the middle of playing and then my girl called and I paused it. I should have just turned it off. I was able to get it boot last night and it seemed ok but I didn't play anything.

Eh it just overheated again. Looks like I'll be bringing the old gal to someone for service.
