343 reveals a lot of new intel about Halo 4 in fan Q&A session

Following the release of the Halo 4 ViDoc earlier this week, fans have had a ton of questions surrounding the upcoming Xbox 360 release. What are these perks that are being talked about? What is the release date for Halo 4? Will there be a beta? Even more detailed questions that ask about ranking system and heads-up-display for the game.

While 343 has taken to the Halo Blog to reveal clarify as much information as possible, there are still many questions left unanswered, but they've unloaded a ton of new details about the game in a recent fan Q&A.

You can catch the full session here, or our shoddily put together recap below:

Is 343 excited to release Halo 4? Yes

Will there be perks? Yes, sorta but maybe not the kind that are synonymous with the Call of Duty franchise.

Can you customize your Spartan? Yes, "you will have a wide degree of control over your appearance."

Will there be a public MP beta? No

What is the release date for Halo 4? 2012. Actual ship date will be rolled out in the future.

Will MP playlists balance ranked and social? Yes, playlists will be tightly focused, consistent, and polished...but will be organic and evolve over time.

What about Forge and Theater? We will do our best not to disappoint fans of the existing Halo feature set.

Will there be any new characters introduced? Yes

Will health work the same as in Halo 2 & Halo 3? No, more details to come and no health box pickups.

Will the Covenant Return? Yes, in a completely overhauled form.

Details about the return of the Battle Rifle: "The BR is a three-shot burst weapon. It is hitscan. In its current tuning, it has recoil (not bloom) which causes it to rise slightly (in a predictable and suppressible way). It is not a replacement for the DMR as has been discussed in the community. You will not see bloom as it currently exists in Vanilla Reach on any weapon, but there will be different methods for reticle targeting that vary depending on the weapon, and players will have a wide arsenal of weapons to choose from. More news about that later."

Assassinations Returning? Yes, altered.

Everybody in the 343, put ya muthafu_in' hands up and follow me!

I've actually been contemplating buying a 360 lately. Even so, I'd still probably have little to no interest in Halo. It seems like a very well-designed shooter, but it's far too multiplayer based, as if the single player were an afterthought.

Sony wish they had a multiplayer game like this.

I love Halo, I'm a huge fan and have been since CE. However, I think they should have ended it completely after Reach. It's time to let sleeping dogs lie.

Beau H. says:
Not true. I buy Halo for the SP experience. Reach was my favorite of the Halo's thus far.

i hope this isnt another way of them saying "we will not have forge mode anymore"

@Drizzle: I think that's exactly what they're saying.

Halo worlds seemed to plastic and bare for my taste. Only finished reach for the achievements. Hopefully 343 can change the series for the better.

Gears of war is better

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 9, 2012 9:25:55 PM PST
That would be a downgrade, especially compared to Starhawk =]

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 9, 2012 9:26:39 PM PST
I disagree. Halo>Gears of War

It is the only one I have yet to finish. I am an hour in. How long is it?

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 9, 2012 10:58:45 PM PST
A few hours - depending on your difficulty.

Legendary? 10-15

Easy/Normal? 7-9ish

Dukeshire says:
Not bad for a shooter. I think Gears 3 netted me around 12 and UC3 around 10-11.

As a person who really enjoys the Halo franchise's plot, from the stuff revealed so far, (according to Wikipedia), the entire plot of Halo 4 sounds terrible and makes almost no sense. It basically sounds like an excuse to make more money from a completed series, (and force everyone to buy it for the new multiplayer). I probably won't bother buying it unless I hear overwhelmingly positive reviews and will probably just stick to Reach.

Halo 4 marks the return of John-117 - the "Master Chief" - as a playable protagonist for the first time since 2007's Halo 3, as 2009's Halo 3: ODST and 2010's Halo: Reach focused on new characters and playing styles. Having been lost in space in the finale of Halo 3, John-117 and Cortana, adrift aboard the wreckage of the UNSC frigate Forward Unto Dawn, find themselves near a mysteriousForerunner planet, which was first seen at the end of Halo 3 once players beat the game on the highest difficulty setting.A key plot point will involve changes to Cortana and how her exposure to Halo and her operation beyond her natural lifespan may have contribute to her becoming "rampant."Developers revealed in fall 2011 that the game will involve a "shield world," a hollow artificial Dyson sphere type megastructure, possibly being set inside it.

The story of Halo 4 will be focused less on the Haloseries' traditional straightforward first person shooter genre, instead relying more on mystery, exploration and discovery. Developers described the game as being grand in scope and scale. Forerunner elements will be featured extensively in the game's environment. Developers also suggested that the game will reveal how humanity and the UNSC have adapted to the galaxy after the end of their war with the Covenant, particularly how they have co-opted Forerunner technology.

Unlike the original trilogy, the story has been designed to be part of a three-game arc from the beginning. In addition, developer 343 Industries is aiming for a more complete connectivity between all of their future media than before, and theForerunner Saga novel Halo: Primordium, the post-war novel Halo: Glasslands, and the terminals inHalo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, will "definitely" have "resonant connections" to Halo 4's story.Little information has been released regarding the storyline trilogy, but developers have intended thatHalo 5 will be a much darker title before the conflict is resolved in Halo 6.

---------------------------------------------------------------
This actually sounds quite interesting. Escpecially the part where Cortana will eventually start going crazy because she's already gone over her expected lifespan and has gathered more information than any other A.I.

John-117? First rule of coming up with a badass name: When read aloud, it shouldn't sound like a Bible verse.

uncledonnie3 says:
If it really bothers you that much just call him Master Chief like everyone else.
